Three Minute Dates- Caritas- Saturday before 8:15 pm

It was that time agaaaaaain! There was a sign on the door and a banner above the stage.

CARITAS PRESENTS
THREE MINUTE DATES

Or maybe, perchance, you totally missed it somehow, and didn't run from the bar before Tino could sign you up for dates. It happens!

And then a few minutes before 8:00, Kitty took the stage under the banner, to a drumroll from the zombie drummer.

"Hello and welcome to another installment of Three Minute Dates!" Kitty began. "In case you're new to this, in a couple minutes I'm going to call out sets of names. You'll find that person, talk to them for a whole three minutes. When you hear this siren-" Oh, that was an obnoxious air horn sound. "-you'll get a new person to talk to. If you got sucked into this without your knowledge, sorry, and also it's fifteen minutes of your life, make some new friends!"

“Okay, I need more olives. Hello? Does this bar have any waitstaff?”

"It has two bartenders," Jon noted. "That one's closer to the olives." He pointed at Tino.

Might as well use knowing things for something useful, he supposed. For a certain definition of useful.

Eliot looked over and shuddered faintly. "I suppose I'll simply have to make do."

With his neverending flask.

"So. Jon. How have you been?"

Two out of five dates on an island he'd barely been on were with people he'd already met. Eliot was faintly despairing over his local options. He might have to not sleep with and forget people around here.

Jon was perfectly happy being not slept with and forgotten!

"I've been fine." Jon was always fine whether he was or not, but he actually was this time. "And y...I hope you have as well."

"Oh, you know, I could complain, but it'd be rather tedious." Eliot shrugged. "Found myself a job, and Margo and I found a decent enough house to move into. Looks like we'll be here for awhile, after all."

"Oh? That sounds...well, the being stuck is regrettable, but having a house and a job sound good." He paused for a second to work out his wording. "I'm interested to know where you're working now."

Eliot was highly amused by that careful wording (I ben as he appreciated the effort not to force an answer.)

“The Magic Box. I happened to wander in looking for information on portals and the like and found a nascent hedge witch running the place. Offered my services.”

Well, she more suggested it and Eliot didn’t have a good reason to say no, but that was basically the same thing, right?

"So it isn't just a store full of...I don't know, rabbits and hats and cards and things," Jon noted.

He was still a bit wary of magic, but it didn't seem like the Fears were involved. Yet, at least.

"I'm not used to that being a...a thing."

"Because it's not entirely fear-based?" Eliot guessed. "But no, it's not full of tricks and illusions. Some of it is definitely actual magic, as I know it. Maybe most of it is actual magic from somewhere. Seems like people here come from all over."

Jon nodded. "That. And also just the, um. The casualness of it, I suppose. There were no 'real magic' shops back home, either. Not openly, anyway."

Taxidermy? Butchers? Sure. Not so much with magic.

"That seems like a shame. You should come by sometime, learn a bit about the real thing."

"I'm...hm. Perhaps," Jon said. "I won't deny I'm curious, but I'm not sure it's the best idea."

"You think you'll become a supervillain if you learn how to light cigarettes with your fingers?"

"I...um. What?" Jon blinked at Eliot for a moment, utterly confused. Then he shook his head. "I think a cheap plastic lighter is fine. The last good one I had? Helped end the world. And in my experience, power isn't worth the cost."

Eliot tilted his head. "For the type of magic I use . . . I'm pretty sure you've already paid in full."

And damn it, Jon knew he shouldn't ask, but he couldn't stop being curious!

"May I ask what that means?" he asked carefully.

“Magic in my world comes from pain. Physical, emotional. . . . Eldritch fear demon trauma would certainly fit the bill.”

Jon made a face, but before he could say anything, the airhorn sounded, and it turned into a wince. "Well, I, um. I suppose I'll see you later, then."

Eliot wiggled his fingers in a wave, and looked around for his next date.
