Caritas- Saturday before 8:15 pm

It was that time of year again! New people were here! New people to date, get to know, or perhaps make a mortal enemy of!

You never know.

Signs were hung up in front of the bar, both obviously, and easy to miss for anyone who might wander in and get signed up without their knowledge. Above the bar was a banner (in glitter):

TONIGHT!
THREE MINUTE DATES!
GOOD LUCK WBRURBODY

Your hostess wasn't gonna question it. And a few minutes before 8:00, she took the stage.

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you're new to this, the rules are simple. We call your name along with one other person. You talk to this person, get to know their likes, their loves, their dreams. After three minutes, a buzzer will sound-" Pause for the sound. "-and you'll hear your name paired with a different person. Et cetera. If there is anyone you'd like to talk to more, the bar will be open afterwards for drinks and conversation. Remember that any violence will get you transported into the pond, but also please don't attempt violence in order to flee, that is rude to the rest of your dates. Now I'm going to get off the stage. Have fun, and good luck..."

She trailed off, not going to attempt to pronounce the word on that sign.

First round done, another glass of scotch ordered and Cutter made his way over to sit down at the table to wait for the second round.

"And you must be Nick?" Tisarwat guessed, as she made her way over to join him at the table. "I'm Tisarwat. And I'm fairly good at remembering which faces I've seen around, even if I haven't spent as much time as I should talking to them, but I really don't think I've seen you around much? I did just get back from a long holiday, though I know we've just started a new semester at the school. Would it be off the mark, then, to assume you're one of the new teachers?"

“I am,” Cutter told her, “I mean, I’m one of the new teachers as well, I’m the new palaeontology teacher,” he paused, having normal conversations was not one of his strong points, “you just got back from holiday?” he asked, “where did you end up going?”

Tisarwat smiled a little at that, thinking she'd be nice and not point out that he confirmed that he was one of the new teachers, but not that he was who she assumed she was. She picked up a certain awkwardness, and it wouldn't do well to make that worse if it wasn't necessary.

"Oh," she said with a dismissive wave of her gloved hand. "All around the world, actually, but mostly anywhere that my roommate and I could hope to find some good tea. I'm not from around here, you see, so it was a good opportunity to finally explore the rich tea culture that this planet actually has."

"And England," she added, because, yes, she did not count that in the previous category when PG Tips were a thing. "My roommate is from there, although an entirely different period of time."

“Oh my last job was teaching at university in England,” Cutter paused, “and I suppose I’m technically on leave from my government job,“ he decided to not add the part where everyone currently thought he was going crazy and talking about imaginary people who only existed in his mind, “I was doing … consulting work for the Home Office in addition to my teaching job,” the one where he was lucky to remember that he had classes to teach.

“I mean I’m from Scotland, originally but I lived in London for years before I moved to Fandom,” he added, “where are you from?” he asked, noting the way she mentioned planet.

Tisarwat seemed to laugh faintly. "I am also, technically, on leave from my government job," she noted, sounding far too amused (and perhaps a little bit bitter) about that, and she took a moment looking at Cutter as if trying to get the measure of him before venturing, "And I'm from outer space. The Radch, to be specific."

And, instead of explaining, she decided to just leave that there and see how he reacted to it, which was always an interesting exercise, with the new ones.

"Outer space?" Cutter echoed, it was still strange to hear people talk about being from somewhere other than Earth, like out of one Connor's sci-fi movies, "I can't say I've ever heard of the Radch," he admitted. "is that in another galaxy? Like Lana's from?"

That was the only reference he had to someone being from outer space.

"Don't feel too bad about," Tisarwat assured him. "Not many people have."

Especially now since Seivarden was gone, but that, Tisarwat felt, was a good thing, since that meant most people's first impressions of it was usually negative (albeit fair).

"And it's another galaxy, another universe, another dimension," she supplied, "although not quite so far, far away as Lana's. There's apparently quite a few of them out there, though. Infinite, really."

"The closest I've ever come to is dealing with distortions in time, called anomalies, usually linked to different dinosaur eras in Earth's past," Cutter revealed, technically breaking the official secrets act that he signed but he figured Lester would have bigger things to worry about than him telling people what he did for a living.

He paused, "up until a year ago I definitely wouldn't have believed in any of this, that people could be from other times or from outer space," he admitted.

"It's amazing how quickly," Tisarwat said, a bit mild, but somewhat fond, "this place can get you used to all sorts of new ideas and phenomena. It's definitely been a learning experience from me since day one, and there's still plenty more I keep discovering, too. Compared to the Radch, Earth is actually really quite...archaic-feeling, but it does have its cha--"

It was right about mid-word that Tisarwat was cut off by the sound of the round ending, and gave the source of it a disparaging look for its rudeness before pushing back her chair.

"Well," she stated, "if anything, this event does provide a good measure for just how short three minutes can be. But it's been nice meeting you, Nick. Perhaps we'll see each other around more."

She would actually have to, you know, go out more, but hey! She was working on it!
