Valentine's Dance; Town Hall; Friday Evening [8 pm - 10 pm]

Arrivals to town hall would notice that the Student Council took a darker approach to the decorations this year. The colors of the streamers, balloons and table cloths were in shades of dark red and black. Instead of cut outs of hearts and pictures of cupid, there were broken mirrors hanging on the walls, open umbrellas scattered about the room, fake cobwebs on the wall and glittery cut outs of the number "13" hung everywhere.

You even had to walk under a huge ladder in order to get into the dance.

Sure, they were tempting fate by having a Friday the 13th themed dance but this was Fandom. What's the worst that could happen?

"Commander," Ben said quietly, nodding his head.

"That would be Admiral to you, Padawan," Ender said, giving him a stoic look. "You're lucky I'm permanently off duty."

Ben pointed at the dragon. "Weren't you a Commander under that symbol?"

"I'm retired from both," Ender said, looking down at the symbol, "So it doesn't actually matter."

"Retired at fifteen," Ben said with a small smile. "I bet people think our lives are strange."

"Around here, I don't think anyone would notice," he said, "Everyone's strange." Which Ender didn't mind. It made it easier to fall through the cracks.

"Especially you," Ben said with a quick smile because the forms must be maintained. "Interesting choice of decor."

"21st century superstition," Ender said, looking up at it. "It's atmospheric, I'll give us that."

"I was thinking slightly creepy," Ben admitted, "but I don't know anything about this holiday."

"It's not about the holiday," Ender explained, "It's about it being Friday Thirteenth. They used to believe nothing but bad luck could happen on it."

Ben's forehead wrinkled. "Really? It's just a day."

"Because you don't have anything you believe is bad luck," Ender said, an eyebrow raised. "Irrationally."

"There's no such thing as luck," Ben informed him loftily.

"I never said there was," Ender noted, "Just that people believe in it."

"People believe in a lot of silly things," Ben said with all the wisdom that being fourteen brings you.

"And you've never believed a silly thing in your life."

"I don't do silly," Ben replied.

"That's the most obvious lie you've ever told," Ender said, evenly.

Ben smiled, not at all sorry about being called on it. "I don't do silly often," he amended.

"Better," Ender said, his tone a little teasing.

"Almost as often as you do," Ben decided.

"I have an excuse," Ender said, mimicing Ben's earlier lofty tone. "Val wouldn't stop bugging me if I didn't."

"Can't have that," Ben agreed. "And Tahiri makes me smile."

For whatever reason, it felt kind of strange to bring her up with Ender.

The very fact of Tahiri was something odd to Ender, who saw his own soldiers in Ben sometimes; so he categorized that away and ignored it. "If only they'd leave us alone," he said, "We'd be a lot less silly."

"Sitting around talking tactics all day," Ben said. "Probably get bored to death of each other."
