As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

Jack didn't have a date, though he was keeping an eye out for Emma. He hadn't heard from her since she went off with Sookie.

But this was his last dance before leaving the island and he wasn't overly worried about Emma. He looked his best as he got to the hall and, wine in hand, began mingling through the crowd.

Kate was mingling, too. Or wandering around aimlessly before she'd retreat back to her shadowy corners for some more quality shoeless time. One of those.

"Yo. Jack," she greeted him, when their paths crossed. "Tell me you did something idiotic yesterday, too."

"I lectured Gunn on staying away from vampires," Jack answered. "So I suppose it depends on your perspective. Why, what did you do?"

[OOC: Alas, you caught me just as I head AFK.]

"It's Puck's birthday today," Kate said, making a face. "So I threw him a tea party."

Yeah, her tone conveyed pretty well that she wasn't exactly pleased with that.

[Ah well, SP is like pie.]

Jack choked on his laughter. "That was very proper and ladylike of you. Did he appreciate it?"

Kate crossed her arms, dismayed, though mostly at the island. "Well, lucky me, he was affected too," she said. "He thought it was, and I quote, 'lovely'."

Jack laughed again, though with a tinge of sympathy. "I'm not going to miss days like yesterday when I leave the island, I can tell you that much."

"Mm. Well, you'd have to be completely fucking insane if you did," Kate noted. "So, when exactly are you leaving? Not that I'm in a massive hurry to get rid of you."

"Haven't booked the portal yet," Jack said sheepishly. "I work Thursdays, so I might try for first thing Friday morning -- a week from Friday, I mean."

It was only a few extra days to stay past the end of term, and Ms. Cabot's files didn't organize themselves. Or so Jack told himself. In truth, he was well aware he was leaving at the last possible moment.

A year ago, he would never have believed he'd drag his feet about leaving the island. But a lot of things were different a year ago.

"It's good to hear you don't have a countdown clock running."

Kate couldn't help looking just the tiniest bit surprised. Somehow she'd managed to not really remember how soon the term was ending, or that he'd be leaving once it did.

"Yes, well, sometimes I can actually be nice," she said, a little distractedly. "I... really hadn't realized it was going to be that soon. Huh."

"It sneaks up on all of us," Jack said, surprised by her distraction. "Is someone else leaving then, too?"

"Hmm? Oh. No," Kate replied with a quick shake of her head. "... That I know of."

She should probably check in with some people.
