As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

"No, it doesn't," he argued. "What you're wearing is your work uniform."

"A formal uniform," she said, lifting her chin. "It is acceptable wear to similar events back home."

He shrugged. "You would look nice in a dress," he insisted.

"I am hardly going to run out and buy one now," she scathed. "Even if the stores in town were open."

"Next time then," he grinned at her. "That'd be Homecoming."

Did she hear how he made that sounded like a done deal?

She did.

And she was not impressed.

"I will wear what I want to wear."

Which was her uniform.

"Shame," he said with a sigh, glancing away for a moment. He was way, way too hot in this suit. "Can I get you anything to drink?"

"Trying to soften me up so I'll dance?"

He laughed and smiled at her. "Maybe," he allowed. "Can you blame me? I dressed up for you when it's way too hot and you won't even spare one dance for me."

"You," she pointed out, "have not actually asked me to dance."

He'd asked her if she was swooning to dance with him. Which she was not. And then he'd told her it was mandatory to dance.

When it was not.

Was he getting the picture here?

Jake tilted his head, much like a wolf would. "I haven't," he realized, then grinned and took a step closer.

He gave her a showy bow and then held out a hand, almost certain this wasn't going to go anywhere. "Could I have this dance from you, Rosalind?"

She could point out that they would look ridiculous with both of them in suits and dancing--at least, ridiculous in her own head--but, really, he had asked so very nicely.

And Rosalind was not inclined to let him think she was entirely predictable. Dancing, too, was something she enjoyed, for all that she also enjoyed the corners of the room.

Rosalind reached for his hand, a faint and bemused smile on her face. "It would be my pleasure to dance with you."

He completely failed at hiding his surprise, but his fingers closed around hers as he straightened up.

"I'll even try to not step on your toes," he teased, gently tugging on her hand to guide her to the dancefloor.

"That would be appreciated."

And that was almost amused as she let him guide her to the dancefloor.
