Summer Dance/Gala Event | Evening | Saturday | June 19

As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

It was possibly a miracle, but Reno was actually learning how to switch the gears in his brain so that he could follow Rikku's weird little tangents.

It had taken a few years. But he'd gotten there, eventually.

"Yeah," he agreed with a snort. "Tried chasin' it out the other day, but it wasn't havin' none of it, yo. Hunkered down in the tub and make these angry, like... huffin' motions, or some shit."

Yes. Reno had been bested by a duck.

Some birds were not to be trifled with.

"You don't think Petey will eat it, do you?" she asked.

And then, considering the situation, "Or that he'll eat Petey!?"

Look, it was one fierce duck, okay?

"I think it'd have a hell of a time tryin' to chew on Petey," Reno pointed out, shrugging dismissively. "He ain't eaten Mako yet, and Mako's just as much of a dumbass as your cat is, yo."

He was. It was one of Mako's many skills.

"Maybe they'll make friends," Rikku suggested, displaying her very own shockingly naive interpretation of the food chain. But, hey, interspecies friendships could work out.

"So ... are you here as a chaperone?" she teased. "Does that mean we can't make out in one of the dark corners?"

Reno snorted and rolled his eyes.

"This ain't no school dance, babe," he pointed out. "I'm here as a guest, yo. Which means we can make out in dark corners all we want."

Which was probably a good idea, because it distracted him from the fact that he'd officially banned himself from spiking the punch at all functions that his students might attend. Pretending to be responsible or something.

"It'd be setting a bad example," she noted. "Then all your students would be led astray. Is that what you want?"

Because, if so, she was all about the dark corners. Just saying.

"You really think my students need me to lead 'em astray?"

And anyhow, they were dark corners. The whole point was to be able to hang out in them, in the darkness, doing things that could not be seen. Because of the dark.

Which was not terribly light!

"You're saying you have nothing to teach your students about misbehaving?" she teased. "I can't believe that. You're supposed to talk about how these whippersnappers don't measure up."

"Hey. Hey, now. I never said nothin' about them bein' able to measure up, yo. Just that they ain't perfect little angels, either." There was a very important distinction between the two, if you asked Reno. "They got a hell of a long way to go before they can hold a match to me, zoto."

He was only mostly bragging.

"I bet they never ... unlaced a dress with their teeth," she suggested, eyes dancing.

"See? Rookies, all of 'em," Reno chuckled, shaking his head and leaning in close. "But, you know... I ain't gonna teach 'em that one."

And now, because of the leaning, he was whispering, lips against her ear.

"I gotta keep some of the good tricks a secret, yo."

"Like fun things to do in dark corners?" Rikku asked. "Except you're a rooooole model so we really shouldn't."

"Yeah, yeah," Reno sighed, taking a moment to just nibble her ear anyhow. "Knowin' our luck, we'll forget what way we're goin' when we stumble outta here, and we'll head back to the dorms outta habit."

Wouldn't that be an adventure?

"Then you'd get fired," she laughed, taking a moment to sigh appreciatively at the ear-nibbling. "And then where would Petey and Mako live? And the duck? Did you name the duck? He should have a name."

Only Rikku would think of things like that while discussing sex.

Rikku's weird gears continued to have excellent timing. Reno's own gears shifted after a slight hesitation, but he managed to more or less keep his bedroom voice going on while he replied with words that should never, ever be said in a bedroom.

Good thing they weren't in one, huh?

"He ain't been named yet, no. I was thinkin' maybe Dumbfuck."

Dumbfuck Duck. It had a ring to it.

It was the voice that was responsible for the shiver, and not the expression.

"You're meeeeeeeeean," she laughed. "You can't call him Dumbfuck. You couldn't call Mako that, either. I'm gonna make you name him something nice, or else."

It was practically a purr.

They were never going to be normal, were they?

Normal was for boring people. Honestly now.

"I was gonna call Mako Dumbass," Reno pointed out, his voice a low purr. "There's a difference. Dumbass is Mako's middle name, yo."

Dumbfuck would clearly be the duck's first name. Which meant Reno could stick more disparaging words somewhere in between other ones, to make a regal-sounding if insulting name for the waterfowl in his bathtub.

"Mako will get confused," she countered. "They're too similar. It's just going to be weird for him. Give the duck a real name or I'm going to be ... really, really sad about it."

She pressed a light kiss to his cheek and wriggled happily in a way that implied Reno wouldn't like for her to be sad.

Oh, he really, really wouldn't. Unless he got to kiss it better...

"But namin' shit is hard," he pointed out. "And he's a wild duck anyhow. I don't see why he really needs a name, yo."

Because they didn't want Mako to get confused. Right.

"Everyone needs a name," Rikku said. "And if you don't give him a name, you're just going to call him Dumbfuck and that's not nice at all. It doesn't fit with Petey and Mako, either."

Apparently, the wild duck that was temporarily staying in Reno's bathroom was to become a cherished family member, one whose name needed to fit the general scheme at work. For the week or two it took Reno to decide he should kick him out, naturally.
