As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

"I'm not hungry right now," she said easily. And it was true. Rosalind had been nibbling earlier. "I am... as well as can be expected."

Scully gave her a questioning look. "That doesn't actually sound like you're 'well.'" She tilted her head. "You look like you've recovered more from being ill?"

"Physically?" Rosalind glanced at her. "I am doing much better. Not quite at my old level, but getting closer by the day."

She could train again!

"Otherwise... there's been a few things," she admitted. "I would not mind your advice, if you had any to offer, after the dance. It's... not a topic I'd care for right now."

"I'm glad to hear you're feeling better," Scully said, then frowned. "Of course. Later is fine. We'll be back in our room on Monday, where we can talk without any interruptions." Or anyone overhearing.

"That would be fine," she said with a nod. "And it has not been all bad. I was told I should wear a dress for tonight."

That had not happened, as Scully could see.

Scully's lips turned up at the corners, and she said, "It's traditional. Though not required. Not a fan of dresses?"

"I prefer pants," she admitted. "And a suit looks quite sharp."

"You make it look good," Scully offered, still smiling. "Who was saying you needed to wear a dress?"

"Jacob," she said. "He is convinced that I need to have more fun."

"Some people don't believe in quiet fun. Although I'm not sure where the dress comes into it," Scully said, trying to hide a smirk. "Jacob's very nice, though. As my recent experience can attest."

Rosalind arched her eyebrows.

"It would encourage him."

Which was, in her opinion, a bad thing.

"Ohh," Scully said, with the tiniest lilt in her voice. She covered her expression by popping one of the little sausage pieces in her mouth, and not hating it. She considered. "He's very tall."

Which would be a drawback for her, but not necessarily Rosalind.

Rosalind gave her a long look.

"What, pray tell, is that supposed to mean?"

"It means nothing. Just a general observation," Scully said mildly. She considered. "Does he take discouragement seriously?"

"Not particularly--or not for long."

Sometimes she managed to get rid of him for a few days, even!

This might be a source of long-term low-key entertainment, if it kept up. Scully decided that observing developments was preferable to upsetting the balance by asking too many questions just yet.

"Then the tiniest concession would be counterproductive, yes."

"Sometimes, he is tolerable," she complained. "And then he becomes markedly less so. He is annoying."

And yet, she'd danced with him.

"I noticed that this morning. When he smirked at me in the graveyard." Not that she didn't completely deserve it, Scully acknowledged. "And then bought me a bagel." Heh.

"So you agree with my assessment? It is hard to decide how to treat him."

"That he can be annoying? And hard to discourage? Well, yes." Scully paused, then had to add, "But he's... stalwart."

Rosalind gave her a look.

"Are you quite certain?"

Scully took another sip of her juice, eyebrows up, giving little away. "From what little I've seen? Yes. But there's always room for more observation."

"You can observe him," she said generously.

Scully swallowed another smile, along with another gulp of juice. "Maybe I will, then."

Perhaps that would keep him off her back? Rosalind was mildly hopeful.

"I wish you the best of luck."
