As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

"It WAS inside-out day," Squall told her. "I frolicked." He still wanted to kiss her, he just didn't want to want to kiss her. He also didn't want her to be sad like that.

"Cheer up," he ordered her. "We're dancing, so you have to enjoy it."

"No, I don't," Rinoa said, giving him a frustrated look. "Why are you so confusing? You almost kissed me the other night. You know you did."

"...It was the dare," Squall told her.

She... thought he didn't like her anymore? He should just let her think that -- it would be easier that way. She would stop trying to get close to him, and he wouldn't be so scared that she would leave him.

...So why couldn't he let her keep thinking that?

"If I wanted a girlfriend, it would probably be you," he admitted grudgingly. "But I don't, so it's not." Time to change the conversation quickly. "If you didn't want to be here, why did you make me come? I had other plans." Like staring at the floor.

"What plans?" she asked, grumpy enough to stop dancing and glare at him. "What plans did you have? If you had plans, why didn't you tell me you did? What is that supposed to mean, anyway? You're not making any sense. You never do."

"They were IMPORTANT plans!" Squall insisted. They involved sitting in his alcove, staring at the floor, and hiding from Rinoa. He'd managed to pass half the day that way, after all.

"I'm making perfect sense," he grumbled. "You're just not understanding."

No, no he wasn't.

This was going nowhere. She put his hands back in place and pulled herself in close.

"Then explain it to me," she said airily. "Tell me what you want. I'll even listen, this time."

"I don't KNOW what I want!!!" Squall spat back. Seriously, did she think this was easy for him?

"I want to be your knight. I want to protect you. Now, can't we just keep dancing and not worry about the rest?"

"I like worrying about the rest," Rinoa teased. "I guess that means no more kissing, tonight?"

Luckily, that fell on a spin, so he was spared having to look her in the eyes for that one.

"No, no more kissing," Squall told her emphatically. "You can worry about the rest for both of us, then."

There were more swings and spins now, and he'd started to dance like he was enjoying it.

"Can there be dancing?" she asked. "On a semi-regular basis, since I'm not getting kisses."

It seemed a fair trade to her!

Squall sighed. "I'll escort you to more dances," he grumbled. "Is that good enough?"

It would have to be. He wasn't going to just TAKE her out dancing randomly.

"It's a start," she conceded. "Will there be snuggling?"

She happened to be a fan of snuggling. It was probably very helpful to her mental state, even. Wasn't that what the point of being her knight was?
