April Fools' Dance, An Abandoned Warehouse, Friday Night

The first arrivals to the warehouse would have found nothing - until the lights went on, dropping many shades of glitter down onto the floor. The glitter would stick around all night, almost-but-not-quite clashing with the colorful decor, though it did not seem to incite any boykissy.

Even if one of the janitors definitely took a shot at using it as an excuse.

There was a karaoke booth set up in the corner, and the rest of the party environment looked chaotic and incredibly merry. Reds, blues, and yellows had been thrown together like a crazy man had attacked the place with some paint.

In all fairness, he hadn't really been listening. Hearing people complain would have been a blow to his ego, okay?

"Besides, them days are behind me, yo. Now it's all... gossip at the water cooler, and sittin' in my office, an' junk."

Well. He sat in his office when he remembered to, anyhow. About once every few months, whether he needed to or not.

Arthur snorted, and took a small cup of punch while he was at it. "I find that very hard to believe. If I ask around, am I going to hear any different?"

"That," Reno mused, reaching for a cup and helping himself to some punch, as well, "depends on who you ask, and how much I bribed 'em to say nice shit about me."

"Still as much an idiot as ever, then," Arthur surmised, sipping from his cup. Carefully. He pulled a contemplative face as he tried to figure out whether the alcohol content was just right. It seemed to pass. "It's good to know some things rarely change."

"You know, it took me nearly twenty-one years to get this dumb? I been workin' hard on it!"

"How you been doin', anyhow? Seems like damn near forever since I saw your mug around these parts, yo."

"Same as always, of course," Arthur blustered, taking a bigger sip of his punch this time. "Winter's upon us in Camelot, so there's little left to do but make sure the food is rationed properly and the fires are stoked high."

Reno made a mental note of that sip of punch, there, and then nodded, pursing his lips a little in thought.

"I think they're just gettin' over winter, back in Edge," he noted. "I ain't all that sorry I missed it."

Yes, actually, he was. He felt kind of guilty that he hadn't been in Edge to hand out yellowish beans to hungry kids. He was way softer than he ever wanted to let on.

"Been a while since I had to spend winter wonderin' if I was gonna be able to keep eatin' all through it. You get good crops this year, at least?"

"Everything seems decent so far," Arthur supplied. He could talk about crop demands all night long, if need be; it certainly felt like he'd run a few marathon discussions about it this winter. "Of course, some of the outlying villages are being threatened by raiders, and they do possess a significant amount of stock. We've brought some of it in to make sure the damage, if caused, is as small as it can be."

Reno nodded thoughtfully at that. Edge had suffered its fair share of raiding in the first couple of years, while everyone was still in a well-founded panic over where their next meal was going to come from.

"Yeah. Seems like about all you can do, when faced with somethin' like that. Postin' more guards around your supplies just means another bunch'a mouths to feed, out on the outskirts."

"But we can't take too much, or we risk starving them all," Arthur said, and exhaled. "But there will always be troubles like that, and at least this year we don't appear to be drowning in them. How about you, then? No fond thoughts of Edge at all?"

Reno shook his head a little. Just because his years in Fandom had made him soft didn't mean he had to actually admit it.

"I miss the people there, maybe, a bit. But the city itself? Edge never had nothin' for me, man. Edge was never really home."

It was built out of the ruins of home. That didn't count.

Arthur actually seemed to digest that, then shook his head and snorted. "Well, at least you couldn't have chosen a more fittingly mad new home in this place," he said. "I dare not ask."

"Eh, Fandom's messed up, but that just keeps me on my toes, yo. And if I ever get real sick of not havin' monsters around all the time to taken on, portals ain't too expensive."

And then he smiled the smile of an utter twit who was trying not to look completely smitten and who was failing at it.

"Besides, I got Rikku with me, here. I can't complain about that, man."

"Mmm," Arthur hummed, choosing not to look at Merlin, thank you very much. "I suppose that does settle a few things."

He took another swig of his punch, and then added, "Has anything odd happened since the last time I was here?"

"Goblins tried to kidnap a bunch'a the kids," Reno offered. "Dunno if you heard about that one. An' people's kids showed up for a weekend, again. I got off easy on that one, yo."

By which he meant that none had shown up for him at all. Which he wasn't going to admit to being disappointed about.

"Nothin' too bad, anyhow. Bunch'a people ended up goin' into the maze after 'em, did some kinda set of trials for this guy with hair bigger'n mine and pants that shouldn't be legal. Everyone got home safe in the end, yo."

"Really, you'd think they'd know better, by now," Reno mused. "I'm surprised they ain't got some kinda warning signs posted on the beaches and the causeway, listin' off all the dipshits we chased outta here before."

Reno wasn't saying that too loudly, though. He kind of enjoyed the chance to kick ass whenever someone was stupid enough to try to take on Fandom.

"They are, yeah," Reno agreed, thoughtfully. "I ain't been by there in a while, but maybe I should fix that, yo. It'd be a good follow-up project to their sister group puttin' out emergency supply kits this week."

He didn't go to the meetings, but damn right, he listened to the radio to see that they were up to.
