Fandom Pride Parade: Saturday Afternoon

The day started with a rainbow. Not that there had been any rain last night, really. The island, noticing the handwavy posters up around town, had figured it wanted to contribute to the spirit of the whole thing, and slapping a big, bright rainbow into the sky had seemed like the obvious way to do it. By around noon, it was clear that the rainbow was going to be sticking around, too, less a meteorological phenominon and more a banner painted across the sky. Down below, little flowers had popped up overnight in bright colours, some mimicking the rainbow up above, some in other configurations; pink-purple-blue, blue-pink-white-pink-blue, black-grey-white-purple, yellow-white-purple-black, and so on. The flowers, fortunately, were there to be pretty, with no other weird effects on the island's populace.

Though, really, if presenting a bouquet of them to one's favourite person ended well for somebody, the island wasn't going to complain, either.

The parade itself was to start on the Causeway, a good gathering point for Fandomites in the past, and a fairly central location on the island. From there it would follow Griffin Lane to Galactica Drive, Serendipity Place, Godiva Street, back onto Serendipity and following it until it turned into Loon and Loon turned into Chimera. Then one final turn onto Apocalypse before ending up at the Park, where people were welcome to sit and mingle to their hearts' content.

The weather was nice, making liars out of the meteorologists in favour of shunting clouds aside for sunshine and a pleasant breeze. A perfect day for a parade!

Look, Sparkle was here. Of course Sparkle was here. Sparkle had heard about the event and had proceeded to spend the rest of the week freaking out about what to wear to the thing. Hell, he was still working on his make-up as he sat on the Causeway, and he'd ordered in an assortment of Mardi Gras beads and various flags for basically any orientation or gender identity that he could find one for.

Every now and again he would pause in perfecting his eyeliner in order to flail at a random passer-by and then shove a handful of beads and the selection of flags at them, in case they wanted to take one, themself.

Jono was still kind of feeling weirdly out of place, here. Even though he was married to a man. Even though it was an event that he'd personally put some effort into organizing. He'd always sort of been on the outskirts of every community he was technically a part of, though, and after some looking around the internet (don't tell Hannibal), he'd kind of found a place to belong in that 'not feeling queer enough' was apparently something that wasn't uncommon among people who identified as LGBT+.

It had been weirdly heartening for him, being able to just look and find people who had that same problem. Sort of the opposite to his weird outsider feeling as a mutant, where he was fairly obviously 'mutant enough' to get, you know, shot at, and he didn't exactly have many places to turn to in order to ask if that feeling was normal.

Identity and community were both weird and wonderful, maddening things.

In any case, he was here today with his flames out, a flag in shades of pink, yellow, and blue worn over his shoulders like a cape, and a sign that he'd made last night that said, in matching colours, I Am Myself Enough.

It was an affirmation on several levels, with him. And even if people happened to not get it, it was good enough for him.

Dante wasn't freaking out, or feeling weird, or any of it. Nah: Pride on island had seemed like a fantastic chance for a loud, middle-finger up kinda party. He showed up in jeans, a long red coat with some black straps and no shirt, colorful trails of Ada's homemade glitter heading down from right under his chin to his chest.

He had his guitar slung over his back too. "Bring on the drinks."

Hannibal was here, dressed in a decent but casual summer suit and a hat, no rainbows in sight. He didn't actually have any to wear.

Where some folks might have had beads or things to pass out, Hannibal had food. Fruit and meat hand-pies, things that didn't require silverware or sitting down.

He was ready for this.

Hardison showed up rocking out with the bi and poly pride. Eliot had stayed up late working on craft projects with Kathy or something and now Hardison had multiple little knotwork accessories announcing. He was shirtless because Pride, dammit, and sign that said 'I refuse to be invisible.'

Hmm. Could he make Eliot make him a flower crown out of those pink, purple, and blue flowers?

Eliot's sister had sent him a rainbow cowboy hat, and he was wearing the crap out of it, today. He had several small braids in the underlayer of his hair, decorated in beads in both bi and poly colors, and he had a number of friendship bracelets from last night's crafting session on both wrists.

Otherwise, he was dressed just like he would be any other day. And grumbling about sun exposure and staying hydrated the way he would any other day.

A healthy Pride is a happy Pride!

Listen, the Merchant of Miracles really didn't know anything about this world's holidays, but there were a lot of them, and that he liked, and, really, how could anyone be against a celebration like this? And, yes, it might be a bit crass, but how could he pass up an advertising opportunity? If anything, it would be nice to have the cart rolling again, even if just for a little parade.

So he and the 'unicorns' (with fancy new sparkly horns, of course!) were there, and he'd decorated his cart to suit the occasion (with its new Turtle & Canary sign, too!), doing some last minute checks on the wheels, because they had a bad habit of popping off at the most inopportune moments.

Anders didn't have a sign, but he was wearing his bi pride shirt from DC as he ran up to join the group. (He figured it counted as fashionably late.)

By the time the parade actually started, Sparkle was wrapped in rainbows. Hell, he'd even pulled a rainbow feather boa from his ever-present backpack and was rocking a pair of high heels all along the parade route, stairs be damned.

Every now and again he'd sort of stray in order to pluck up a flower and then add that to his whole ensemble, and he still had enough flags and beads on hand that he was passing them out to anybody who might be sitting and watching, too.

Jono had to admit, he kind of had to appreciate this particular way of being defiant in the face of adversity. A lot.

More than Xavier's way, anyway, or Scott's after him. Not that he figured a 'mutant pride' event would end in anything shy of a few completely destroyed city streets and a mass funeral. But then, the movement for equal rights for the LGBT+ community hadn't exactly been without its own share of conflict. And they didn't exactly have a reputation for dressing children in costumes and encouraging them to blow things up and punch people...

He was going to be pondering that all along the parade route, really, his pansexual pride flag-cape fluttering in the breeze.

Dante wasn't the most ebullient or rainbow-y marcher, heavy glitter trails notwithstanding. He stuck his hands in his coat pockets and walked along, a heavy grin on his face.

Hannibal mostly just strolled along next to Jono, nodding and smiling at anyone he knew along the way. He was here, he was marching, but he wasn't really the cheering and jumping around sort.

Hardison wasn't marching in the parade, he was grooving. He'd rigged up a system to blare as many Pride anthems as possible and was dancing along the route to them.

As a man with a tiny but tall cart perfect for the streets of Fandom Island, how could the Merchant of Miracles not join in on a parade? He'd dressed it all up in rainbows and sparkles for the occasion, too, with the 'unicorns' proudly pulling it squeakingly along. He'd gussied up their horns so that were all bright and sparkly with glitter, even sparkled up Mr. Fancycake's eyepatch, and he'd even chosen his most colorful turban for himself, waving to the crowd. If anything, he felt he was doing a good job of representing strange little old men who were probably centuries old that you'd probably not imagine the love lives of if you could help it, but, hey, good on you, probably centuries old little old men, you do you!

For those who would rather watch than march, there's plenty of parade route to do so from. Maybe not so much in the way of sidewalk once the streets are actually full of people, but Fandomites are creative and they'll figure it out if they want to.

Lucille had found a spot from which she could watch the parade. She wasn't going to participate, of course, and the whole thing seemed rather strange to her, but some of her closest friends here belonged to the group whose rights were being celebrated, and she could appreciate that.

She suspected that her love never would. How strange that it would perhaps be easier to find a young lady to share her life with, at least here.

Cassandra was mildly perplexed by the entire thing. If someone had explained it to her, she would have found no issue with it, but wondering how it could be that such a thing was even necessary.

As it was, though, she would be standing along the route, frowning for a few minutes, before deciding it too much of a distraction and heading off.

Yeah, Atton did not think his 'occasional opportunist' qualified him to be in this thing, so he was fine to leave it to the people who did qualify.

Still, considering his roommate and everything, it felt weird not to show up in support. So there he was. Supporting people. Yep.

Standing along the sidewalk with a bottle of water in case Sparkle got a heatstroke under all of those rainbows, maybe.

Kathy was cheering and waving flags on the side of the road and cheering for all her loved ones in the parade. Eliot had done her hair in embroidery floss hair wraps last night, complete with little dangling pi beads and hearts with infinity symbols and she jingled as she bounced and cheered.

Tip had found herself a perch on a street light along the parade route, from which she was hollering and cheering.

She had no idea yet how she identified. But she was more than happy to cheer on those who'd worked it out.

Raven had a big, bright, pansexual flag bracelet on her wrist, which she kept picking at and fussing with. She wasn't used to wearing actual things, but Kathy had made it for her, so of course she had to wear it.

She watched the parade with a small smile from the edge of a roof towards the end of the parade route. She felt a little strange attending, like she didn't entirely belong. It'd never been the love part of her identity she'd been most anxious to hide.

The picnic isn't scheduled until tomorrow, but that doesn't generally stop people from hanging around to chat after the fact! Feel free to chat, feed the birds, wander around picking flowers, enjoy the rainbow, or whatever else you want to use the park for this afternoon!

Sparkle was cackling as he found himself a patch of grass to flop back on, and grinning as he stared up at the sky. Hey, he figured the island sucked most of the time.

But... you know... the rainbow was a nice gesture. Especially during his very first Pride parade.
