Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and ~~octopuses~~ ~~octopi~~ octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

Peridot, who had gathered enough about Homecoming by now to know that she was meant to dress up, walked in wearing the bow in her hair that Ada had given to her ages ago. She stopped a few steps in, squinted a little at the decorations, and tilted her head.

"I'm never going to understand these things," she muttered.

"I don't get it," Aloy said, coming up to stand beside Peridot.

"Me neither," Peridot agreed. "I think this is another one of those 'fun' things."

She was never going to get it. Ever.

"A bunch of people standing in a tacky room full of fish stuff and food?" Aloy said. "I'm not seeing the 'fun' here."

"I've been told that many people find food to be enjoyable," Peridot offered. "Music, too. But besides that, I really don't know."

"Food's fine," Aloy allowed.

She'd just never been to anything like this before. A room full of people? That alone was new.

Complaining was just her way of aggressively being a shell-shocked wallflower.

"I don't know what all the glitter is for, though."

"I believe people find it... aesthetically pleasing," Peridot hedged, looking around at it all. "I think it's more frivolity, personally. And it makes you terribly conspicuous."

"I wouldn't exactly go tracking a little one in the grass looking like this," Aloy agreed, swiping some glitter off her cheek.

Peridot tilted her head, unfamiliar with that terminology, but clearly intrigued.

"A little what?"

"A little one," Aloy said, remembering belatedly nobody here would know about them. "They're these machines that look out for all the other ones, alerting the herd if they notice anyone."

Peridot considered that for a moment, and then nodded, mollified, for the time being.

"That sounds useful," she decided. "What do you hunt them for, then? So that the herd doesn't know you're coming?"

"That's part of it," Aloy agreed. "But we also scavenge the machines for parts. The little ones carry useful stuff, too. I made my spear that way."

Which was at home. Sigh.

"And you use the spears to hunt... machines? Or animals? Or...?"

There were a lot of options, here. Peridot was holding off on suggesting 'one another,' though.

"Machines and animals. Though the ones I make, they're best for machines," Aloy said. "There are ways to use their parts to stun or freeze machines... sometimes that's an edge you need."

Peridot nodded thoughtfully.

"Gem weapons are made with de-stabilizing a Gem's physical form in mind, it would make sense to make your spear to target the machines' particular weaknesses as well, of course. What kind of other things do you build with the parts you pick up?"

"Armor," Aloy said easily. "Fencing. That kind of thing. Anything more and Rost starts getting tetchy, though - but I really want a tripcaster."

"A what?"

This was going to be a running theme with this conversation, most likely. Peridot didn't seem to mind, though. She liked learning.

"It lets you set traps at a distance," Aloy explained. "Electrified wires or wires that set off an explosion... it's a lot less dangerous."

Still pretty dangerous. But less!

"Ooooo." Peridot liked traps. "I used some old Gem tech to set up traps, once. I can appreciate those tactics."

They were less likely to get a person poofed and bubbled!

"Like what kind?" Aloy asked, interested.

"There was an old Gem warship," Peridot explained. "Plenty of room in there for pitfalls, and a security system that let me monitor the situation from a safe distance."

Well, theoretically. She hadn't counted on fusions.

"That seems useful," Aloy mused. "Though it could lull you into a false sense of security."

"Yeah," Peridot sighed, "I figured that one out."

She'd lost a foot that way.

"Still, it was interesting to see what kind of technology we considered impressive, five thousand years ago."

"What, you mean ain't no one taught you how t' dance yet?" Ada asked, giving Peridot a grin. "Hey, I think I recognize that bow!"

"Dante tried, once, at a party," Peridot offered, and then shrugged, grinned a little, and reached up to touch the bow in question. "And yes, you would. I still like it..."

She didn't have much in the way of clothing, really. This one meant all the more, because it was also one of the first things she'd ever been given as a gift, at all.
