Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and ~~octopuses~~ ~~octopi~~ octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

"You gotta catch me first anyway," Reno pointed out. "But hell, sure, that sounds like a good time. Who you here with, anyway?"

Hania turned and pointed at Leto. "That's my father. My mother couldn't come with us."

"... Holy shit! Leto!" Reno laughed and threw up one hand to wave. "Damn, I should'a known. You're Leto's kid? Your dad an' I go way back, yo."

"You do?" Hania looked exited. "Then I can't try and stab you."

Leto waved back and began to make his way over to them, drink in one hand.

"Don't worry, kid," Reno said easily. "I ain't no fun to stab anyway."

He tended to stab back.

"Yo, Leto! Been a while!"

"It has," Leto agreed. "It's good to see you. What are you doing these days?"

Hania, noticing that this conversation was turning very boring, chipped in: "He has promised to help me feed jelly to the jellyfish."

Reno was about to reply to Leto when Hania cut in, and Reno remembered why it was he always felt so lost around kids. How the hell did anybody keep up?

"What she said, I guess," he replied, tilting his head. "The invisible ones."

"But you have to catch one first, don't you?" Leto told Hania. "Come back with one and I'm sure Reno will help you feed it."

Hania gave a quick nod, then spun around, heading off at a pace that would most likely result in her running into someone else.

"It is ok to tell her no, you know," Leto said, turning to Reno. "So, now that we won't get interrupted, how are you?"

"Hell if I know what to do with a kid," Reno replied, spreading his hands a little and grinning sheepishly. "But yeah, now that we ain't gonna get interrupted, I'm not bad. Doin' a pit-stop on the island before headin' off to do a favor for a Rookie. Home's about as stable as it's gonna be, whether I'm there or not, so now it's time to start finally doin' what I can for people who matter."

Or for people who he maybe owed an apology to.

"How 'bout you?"

"For now, I'm fine," Leto said, smiling a little. "I can't remember when we last met. Ghanima and I have set the plans we have made for our universe in motion." He sipped his drink. "I also have a family."

"Guess I just met a part of it, huh? Cute kid, yo."

He was so, so lost around children. So lost.

"Yes," Leto said. "Hania is my and Alice's daughter. And as I said, you can tell her no."

"Friggin' weird, telling someone else's kid what to do," Reno noted. "But she seemed like a good one. Even if she kept threatenin' to stab me."

Honestly, that was half the reason he kind of liked the kid, though.

"I've told her not to do that in Fandom," Leto said with a laugh. "Or I'll take her knives away."

He guessed Reno didn't mind, though.

"Did I ever tell you what happened to the chocobos?"

"Gotta say no to that one," Reno replied, blinking. "Something happened to the chocobos?"

Leto laughed. "You don't remember? You helped me catch a few chocobos to bring to Arrakis."

"Nah, nah, I remember that part," Reno said with a wave of his hand. "No idea what you did with them from there. They doin' okay?"

"Not really, no," Leto said. "At first they settled in quite well and adapted to there being less water than they were used to. They even increased in number to the extent that people began to notice them. I should have kept an eye on them, but it was a turbulent time, and when I looked to see what had happened, it turned out that some people had found them tasty. They are all gone, sadly."

It was sad, but Leto had to deal with killing half the population of entire planets, which put things in perspective.

"They ATE the chocobos?"

Reno looked slightly horrified. Only slightly, at least.

"Damn, that would've fed a lot of people, at least."

He wasn't helping to chase down more.

"I believe they were starving," Leto said. "As I said, things were turbulent."

"I ain't gonna fault people for eating while they're hungry," he allowed. "Birds would've been more useful being put to work, but hungry is hungry, yo."

"That was my thought too. I never looked for those responsible."

Which was generous, he supposed, although this had been shortly after he and Ghani had seized the throne from Alia and they had had more important things to deal with.

"Yeah, maybe somewhere down the road, we can try again. Uh. After the risk of people stealin' 'em and eatin' 'em is gone."

Poor birds.

"I'm not sure that risk will be gone in quite some time," Leto said.

Not until Arrakis was better suited to producing food.

"They might be safer in your world."

"Yeah, at this point that's probably the case," Reno allowed. "Still, you know where to go to get more if it comes to that, yo."

It wasn't like the chocobos on Gaia were hurting, really.
