Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and ~~octopuses~~ ~~octopi~~ octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

Just because he was on StuCo didn't mean he did work!

"What?!"

Ada scowled and gestured at the decorations around them. "A little warning next time?"

The temptation to throw a seashell at you was strong, Dante. So strong.

"I wasn't paying attention in StuCo," Dante offered.

It was... not much of an excuse, no. And there went all his sea puns.

Ada sighed and rubbed at her face. "Please tell me someone's already spiked th' punch?" she asked hopefully. Once she got dancing and was a little tipsy, it wasn't going to bother her as much. It was, mostly, just the getting caught by surprise.

"Let this be a lesson t' you. If'n you'd paid attention an' told me earlier, maybe I woulda shown up in a seashell bra."

"Okay, okay, next time I'll pay attention," Dante said. He glanced towards the punch. "Don't think it's spiked yet, but I got something if you need it."

He held up a flask.

"You usually got what I need, 's one reason I can't usually be mad at you for more'n a minute," she joked, accepting the flask. "Or maybe it's your pretty eyes, one of th' two."

It was the emotional support, but shhh.

Ada took a sip before passing it back to him. "You gonna dance with me later, or you already got your dance card filled up?"

"I got time to dance," Dante said, taking a quick sip of the flask, too. "Told Kathy and Anders I wanted an hour around here before we took off."

And part of him was still kind of quietly sad that making the choice he'd made meant he couldn't take Ada for different kind of spin.

Ada lit up when he said he had time to dance. She'd been a little worried that dancing was now off-limits, like kissing was.

(She missed the kissing -- and the rest -- but she'd never, ever, say so, because she didn't want to make him feel sad or guilty.)

"An' hour? Now who's being old?" she said, shaking her head. "You gotta dance with me, an' 'Bela, an' probably me and 'Bela, an' you still gotta fill me in on all th' stuff I've missed th' last few weeks."

"I'm not getting old, just looking forward to the rest of my night," Dante said, grinning.

He held a hand out for hers. "Haven't missed all that much. Moved out of the dorms. Well, not officially, don't tell the fucking teachers."

"So I hear. Hya says you ain't barely been around at all," she replied, taking his hand. "Th' new kids can't be all that boring, are they?"

Make friends, Dante! Ada wouldn't worry about you half as much if you made new friends!

"... Just been busy," Dante admitted. "Me and Anders and Kathy and Kathy's friend Raven are living in town now, and the new kids are kind of-- eh."

Flirting up a storm wasn't as much fun when you couldn't follow through.

Oh please, Ada couldn't follow through on 90% of her flirting, but that didn't generally stop her.

"How's Anders adapting to life as a graduate? He ever wake up thinking he's late for class? I did, like, twice, but bein' back at work broke me of the habit pretty darn quick." She gave him a crooked grin. "Now th' only thing that'll get me up b'fore noon is th'cats wanting attention."

Ada hadn't spent the vast majority of her teenage years sleeping with anything that'd let her. Dante's boundaries were different.

"Anders is fine with it," he said wryly, making a note to ask after the cats in a second or so. "But, y'know, Anders. He rolls with the punches pretty easy, and it's not like he got a bad deal coming out."

"Livin' with his favorite people, however could he cope?" she teased. "Oh! Text me th' address sometime? I sent you postcards from th' road, but I mailed 'em to th' dorms 'cause I didn't know no better."

They were the most ridiculous postcards she could find, Dante. You're welcome.

"I saw most of 'em," Dante promised. "I still have some stuff laying around the dorms, I'm stopping by on the regular."

"'S long as I don't get caught, you're gonna keep getting more," she warned him cheerfully. "At least one per state, maybe two for th' big ones like Texas that don't never seem to end."

"Ew, Texas," Dante said. "What's a girl like you doing in a place like that?"

"Leavin' New Mexico," Ada laughed. "We're gonna work our way straight across Texas in t' Louisiana, up in t' Mississippi, loop around Tennessee, an' head back into Arkansas to start west again."

Ada's world geography might still suck, but she knew the various routes the carnival took like the back of her hand.

"Texas got lots of bored Townies outside th' big cities lookin' for a good time, an' it's usually easy money."

"Yeah, but it's... Texas," Dante said, pulling a real Northeast Coast kind of face.

"Gotta go through Texas t' get t' Louisiana, which is my favorite after New Mexico," Ada said cheerfully. "B'sides, Texas girls are pretty an' th' boys don't watch their wallets."
