Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and ~~octopuses~~ ~~octopi~~ octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

"At sea, most of all," Edward said, trying to inject some ease into it. Rather everything else about his life was a smoking pile of rubble at the moment. "Working my arse off for the crown. How about you, then?"

"Just got back to the island back in...February, I think," Kathy responded, eliding over a few smoking piles of rubble, too. Literal ones, in some cases. "Went home for a bit, but it got a little crazy over there."

"Must be some 'crazy' if it draws you back to the island in order to flee it," Edward said, amused. "Though I suppose I also think fondly of this island..."

What with not having an estranged wife or estranged parents or a burned-down farm while he was here...

"After LA, the island was pretty much the only place I could go," Kathy said, a bleak expression flitting over her face before she was glancing up with a grin. "But it's got plenty of high places to jump from, so I make due."

"Sounds like quite the tale," Edward said. "But perhaps... not a tale to be shared at a festive gathering?"

He was just guessing.

"Are any of the stories that end with, 'and then I was happy to be back on Fandom' the kind that ought to be shared while celebrating?" Kathy asked, voice light. "Especially not when someone else probably has tales of adventure and derring-do on the high seas?"

"Don't have much of those either, I'm afraid. Unless you're looking for fascinating tales about swabbing the decks and eating foul food, wishing for the rodents to show up to give it some flavor," Edward said wryly.

"Eesh," Kathy said, looking concerned. "That sounds awful. Give any thought to staying here after Homecoming than going home to that?" Accepting the king's shilling definitely sounded worse than dealing with a sharknado or something. "The food here is good, even if you have to deal with glitter showing up to give it some sparkle."

"Alas, I can't," Edward said, shaking his head. "I've got to make my fortune, make something to myself. I owe it to my wife."

Owed it to himself, more like, but Edward had always been into denial.

"Your wife?" Kathy asked. "You're married? Congratulations!"

The idea of someone she'd gone to school with being married already was a little weird, but Edward had been from a vastly different time. And who knew how much time had passed for him since he'd been gone.

"Aye, to my Caroline," Edward said, his mouth curving. "We've had a bit of a falling out recently, but it'll be all right."

A lot of useless and unbidden bits of advice sprang to mine, but Kathy wasn't so arrogant as to think Edward needed her input on a situation she literally knew nothing about. See? She was maturing. "I hope you get it all worked out again soon," she said with all sincerity.

Well, mostly sincerity and a little bit of humor. "Maybe bring her a starfish barrette? Nothing says 'I love you' like an abundance of glitter on a random sea creature."

"When I get back from the high seas, I hope to be able to afford a bounty of glittery starfish," Edward said, smiling faintly. "That's my way to her heart."

"Who doesn't love a whole bucket of glittery starfish?" Kathy asked. "Bedazzled sea creatures are the way to every woman's heart, I'm sure."

At least, she was hoping he was making that joke and not suggesting that this Caroline was only in it for the money.

... No, not at all. Caroline was the opposite; she wished for Edward to fixate less on the money, but Ed was a fool and a stubborn soul.

"Perhaps I'll even toss in some glittery lobster, just to show I'm not a one-trick pony," he said. "Speaking from such experience-- might you have found someone to shower in bedazzled starfish, if I may ask?"

Good on her! Listen to your wife, Edward! You know, while you still had one.

"I, uh, have," she said, blushing. Why was she blushing? It was a mystery for the ages. But here she was, flushed cheeks, dopey smile and all. "Err, two such someones, in fact? You used to hang around with Anders, right?"

"...Yes?" Edward said slowly.

He and Anders had had some confusion about Anders' love life, once upon a time. Though Ed was generally happier not thinking about it.

This was probably not helping any.

"He, and...I don't know if you ever met Dante?...and I are together. Have been for a few months now. At least officially."

Before that, well, it fell under the heading of 'It's complicated.'

There was a long pause. "I see," Edward said. "As long as you're all happy, I suppose."

He was trying, but some things just didn't happen in the world he came from.

(That would change once he got to the Caribbean, though not for him personally.)

Kathy was trying to keep a straight face at his obvious consternation, but it wasn't going well. "We are," she assured him. "A bit unconventional, but hardly the weirdest thing to happen on the island."

Edward let out a somewhat uncomfortable chuckle. "I can hardly argue with that," he said.

"You know that Parker's with Hardison and Eliot, right?" she said brightly, remembering how fond Edward had been of Parker.

"...No."

"Oh," Kathy said, suddenly feeling sheepish. "Uhh...yeah? For a couple of years now. They're ridiculously happy."
