Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and ~~octopuses~~ ~~octopi~~ octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

Which was why Kathy was pleased to have been in Mexico when it happened.

"I hope you can," she said, utterly sincere. She knew how it felt to see your whole world crumble. "I hope you make a difference."

"You an' me both," Reno replied, nodding. "I got better chances than they do, anyway, just knowin' what I know about where everything starts. That's gotta be worth something, if they decide to listen."

"Sometime's the listening's the hardest part," Kathy acknowledged with a sigh. "Especially when they're convinced they know what's best."

Not that she was speaking from personal experience here, perish the thought.

"I figure it'll be hard for anyone to think they know better'n someone who lived it," Reno pointed out. "Besides, I know my way around most of 'em."

He titled his head at her thoughtfully.

"Listenin' goes both ways, I guess. End of the day, I can make the offer, but it ain't my world to save if they won't accept it."

"True," Kathy acknowledged with a sigh. "Still, if it can be saved, I hope it is. A world's a lot to lose because someone didn't want to listen."

"Don't have to tell me," Reno replied, nodding. "But hey, they got a better chance than we did. I got high hopes, yo."

Well. He had middle hopes and Turk stubbornness.

Sometimes that was all it took. The right person in the right place who refused to move.

"Well, good luck with it," Kathy said. "You've got an island of people cheering for you, for the good that'll actually do."

Well-wishes and prayers for Midgard!

Midgar, even. Midgard was a different world!

But hey, Reno would take thoughts and prayers at this point, too.

"Better than nothin'," Reno replied, and then smirked a little. "Ain't never been cheered for before. That'll be neat."

Honestly, that was about the level of fuckup in the current administration.

"I heard there used to be a cheer squad without any sports teams," Kathy said with a chuckle. "I mean, if they're not doing anything anyway, might as well root for a good cause."

"Wonder if they travel," Reno mused. "Assuming they're still around, anyway. School still doin' extracurriculars, do you know?"

Not that it mattered much, really, but hey. Small talk.

Kathy shrugged. "Sorry, I don't know. I...left back in March of last year and haven't really been back on school grounds since."

"Hey, fair enough," Reno said, holding up a hand and shaking his head. "Sounds like you had your own heap of shit to deal with, I'll just ask around."

Because... hey. He missed the place. A bit. He wasn't in any hurry to get back to it, but it wouldn't hurt to know, either way.

"I'm sure there are plenty of people more in-touch with school stuff than me," Kathy said, shading towards relief. "I mostly bum around the house or watch over my shop. But you can probably ask almost anybody else and get a better answer."

"Ain't like I'm in a bad place for it," Reno agreed, looking around. "So, shop?"

Kathy blushed a little. "I, uhh, took over Dite's? I was nearby when the manager stormed off and tossed the keys away and it seemed like a good idea at the time?"

"Job's a job," Reno said with the shit-eating grin of a guy who once did a lecture on safe sex out in public entirely to spite some crazy witch who had some kind of hangup against public displays of affection. "Enjoyin' it at least?"

And Gwen Stacy once hosted a public porn viewing in a common room to spot her. Oh Fandom.

"It's actually really fun," Kathy said. "I get a kick out of making the displays and I've got a good deal with the Hobby Lobby for birth control stuff. I could do with a few more employees--" like, say, any "--but I like not being beholden to anybody."

"What, students around here too shy to throw a few toys on a shelf?" Reno smirked a little at that. "Though hey, good to know you're hirin'. Maybe I'll keep you in mind if I ever end up in this neck of the woods again."

Kathy laughed. "They all skitter past with their eyes averted," she said. "On the other hand, I've got a few ideas for a discrete internet service so they can shop on their phones and never have to set foot in my sordid little store."

Dite's was actually very nice and rather tasteful. Ish.

Reno laughed at that.

"Shit, knowin' teenagers it'd probably just result in nobody ever bein' able to get mail again without people speculatin' what's in the package," he noted. "Which could be hilarious all on its own, granted..."

"Which just means I should start sending perfectly innocuous packages shaped like dildos now," Kathy mused. "Cookies in suggestive-looking packages."

"People won't know if it's a package for them, or a package for their package," Reno snorted. "Shit, if that ain't the most beautiful thing I heard this week, I don't know what is."

"When everyone is a perv, no one is," Kathy said with a laugh.

"See, that's what I keep tellin' people," Reno chuckled, "an' for some reason, nobody ever listens, yo."

"I have been and always will be, your student," Kathy said with a flourished bow.

...Look, there ain't no way she was curtseying in her old junior prom gown.
