Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

Okay, a unicorn was better than skunks. Granted that could be damning the unicorn with faint praise, but still.

Not sure if her status as a virgin would affect her reception any, Blair stepped over to introduce herself.

"Blair Waldorf. Do you talk?"

His ears went forward. "My name is Jan," he replied, nodding in greeting. "And I do talk. Hello."

Okay, talking. Not... trying to do whatever a unicorn did around virgins. Blair could work with that.

"Thanks for coming," she said. "You're much better than the skunks."

"Vile things," Jan said, skin twitching. "Just vile." He stamped one hoof. "Thank you for the welcome. I have never seen anything like this," he said. "It's beautiful."

Blair beamed. "Thank you. It's a shame you missed the Ice Party. Though - how do unicorns get along with polar bears?"

The things they didn't teach you in Bio.

"I'm not certain," Jan replied, puzzled. "I've never heard of a polar bear."

"Like bears but white and they live in cold areas?" Blair offered, by way of explanation.

Jan shook his head, ears curving out to the sides sadly. "I do not know what a bear is."

"Clearly an inferior animal," Blair said.

Jan preened and tossed his head, arching his neck to make his mane fall flowingly across his shoulder.

Jan could be a little vain.

"Not knowing what one is, I still find myself in agreement," he said happily. "Is there something I should be doing at this gathering? Singing a lay, or leading a dance?"

"There's dancing," Blair said. "Or food."

Realizing the lack of opposable thumbs, Blair added, "I could have a plate made for you, if you like?"

"If it wouldn't be too much trouble?" Jan looked hopeful. "It all smells so good."

"Of course not," Blair said. After all, what were ~~NPC~~ servers for? "Is there anything in particular you'd like?"

He dragged one hoof on the floor, then looked up at her from under his forelock. "Are there oats?"

"There's a pie with oats in it?" Blair replied, not sure if that would count.

He bobbed his head. "Oats," he said happily. "In any form they are wonderful."

"Anything to drink?" Blair asked. There was plenty of booze, of course, but with the skunks around Blair was reluctant to offer alcohol to an animal. She wouldn't say no if Jan asked though.

"Water?" he asked. "If there is a bucket, otherwise I am fine."

Blair pondered this problem. "Just a sec."

She went over to talk with the servers. In a few moments she came back with a server who left a healthy piece of the pie with oats in it, and water in one of the ice buckets (http://www.amazon.com/14k-Gold-Bucket-Champagne-Charm/dp/B000GJ2LSO).

Jan stared at the bounty, then looked at her almost shyly. "Thank you for your kindness and your generosity," he said, and stretched out his nose to try and nuzzle her shoulder.

Blair wasn't quite sure what to make of that. She went to pat Jan on his side and hoped he wouldn't drool on her clothes. "What kind of hostess would I be if I didn't make sure all my guests were comfortable? So you know, you are always welcome at my parties."

If Serena ever had a talking unicorn at one of her parties... well, actually Serene could probably pull that off. But Blair was first, damn it!

Jan snorted when she patted him, in a pleased way. "I will remember," he promised and dropped his head to nibble on the pie. Oats were very distracting.
