Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

This place was seriously bizarre, Joan decided.

Luckily, she found a stick and poked at the skunk. "Get off!" she yelled.

The skunk didn't like getting poked. It got off of Hoshi's leg and scampered off, only stopping to turn around and stick its tongue out.

"This place just gets more bizarre every day," said Hoshi. "And I feel pretty foolish now about screaming over a skunk."

"I would have screamed too," Joan said. "If those things spray you, the smell lasts forever."

"I'm glad I didn't have to find that out. Thanks for helping me. My name is Hoshi. I don't think I've seen you around," she said.

"Oh, I'm Joan," she said. "I just got here last week."

"Welcome to Fandom, then," said Hoshi, smiling. "We usually don't get so many creatures running through here. Well, almost usually."

Joan smiled back. "Yeah, the last week has been pretty eye-opening."

"Yeah, this place can take a bit of getting used to, depending on what time period you're coming from," said Hoshi. "I think I was in shock my first day."

"I'm from now," Joan said. "But the mere fact that you have to ask that question is enough to make my head spin."

"Well, hold on for this one," said Hoshi with a bit of a smile. "I'm from about 140 years in the future. I didn't get any warning either. They just dropped me off right at the end of the causeway."

Joan gaped. "Are there, like, flying cars and stuff?"

Luke would have a geekgasm if he knew about this place.

"We have flying transports, but they don't look anything like the cars from this era," said Hoshi. "I've known a few people who like to fix up old-fashioned cars as collectors items."

"What else is different in the future?" Joan asked.

"Well, we don't use money and we have cargo ships that travel at the speed of light or faster," said Hoshi.

"Neat," Joan said.

"But the history of my world is slightly different than this one, so I'm not sure how much of it will happen here," cautioned Hoshi.

"That's so weird," Joan said. "I'm sure my geekazoid little brother would understand it all though."

"I'm not even sure I understand it myself sometimes," said Hoshi. "But give me a foreign language and I've be fluent in days."

"Wow, that must come in handy."
