The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

A skunk wandered by, mumbling something about finding a bathroom and Meg shook her head. "Does it ever get any less weird?"

"Some days are quiet, though...this kind of things happens a lot," Summer explained. "You've probably been told this already, but you get used to it. I got used to it and I'm from a world where this stuff doesn't exist."

"Same here," she said. "No aliens, no talking animals, no hologram classrooms. They told me this place would be different. But they never said how different."

"I was told the same thing before I came here," Summer replied. "My dad seriously has no idea how weird this place actually is."

"I'm pretty sure Preston knew the details. He just thought it would be funny not to tell me," Meg grumbled. "Next time I see him, we're going to have a long talk."

"Who's Preston?" Summer asked curiously.

"He's my dad's press secretary," she explained. "He's also a good friend."

"Press secretary? Is your dad, like, the president or something?" Summer asked.

"No. That would be my mom," Meg answered. "Dad's official title is First Gentleman."

"Oh wow, that's awesome," Summer said. "And it also means you're not related to my president. Which is seriously a good thing."

She shrugged, there were more drawbacks in Meg's mind. "Oh? Why's that?"

"Because he's a jackass," Summer replied.

It couldn't be possible, could it? "What's his name?"

"Bush. Or shrub as I like to call him," Summer replied. "My dad totally was a rebel and voted for Kerry. In Orange County. He'd kill me if he found out I told anyone that."

She was amused, though.

Meg grinned. "I've called him worse. You'll be happy to know my mom was sworn in to clean up his mess."

"Glad to spread the good news," she said. "It's weird because you're heading the election that elected my mom. But to watch and she's not involved? It's strange. I'm going to have to do some reading."

"I'm not really into politics to be honest," Summer admitted. "But maybe I should be."

"Maybe I'll do some reading up on it." Maybe then she'd feel a little smarter.
