The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"Hi there," Ella said, also carefully giving the skunks a wide berth. "Have a good week?"

"It was nice and quiet until today," Dick said. "Two classes in the morning, some time in the library this afternoon, and now this. All I had before that was a single class on Tuesday."

"I was at work today," Ella commented. "I think I'm now the world's expert at cooking for drunk skunks."

"Find anything interesting in the library?"

"Just a bunch of books on general world history," Dick said. "I'm trying to bone up for The Doctor's class. I somehow ended up being a TA."

"I didn't get history this time," Ella said. "TA, really? That always seems like it would be fun." Yes, she was that much of a nerd. "I think I would have to quit the diner, though, if I wanted to take on more responsibilities."

"I've actually been taking it really easy in terms of responsibilities up till now," Dick said. "Now's the time when I go nuts with it. I'm also looking at Student Council."

"I halfway thought about that myself," Ella admitted. 'But you should run. You'd be good at it."

"If nothing else, it would get the 'whole service to the community' thing off my chest since I can't really do anything with the Wayne Foundation at the moment," Dick said. Also, crimefighting. "Why don't you run for it, though? The job thing again?"

"I just hadn't had time to decide," Ella shrugged. "You know we'd be running against each other." Which ... might be kind of fun.

"I'd win, of course," Dick said confidently. "But there's more than one spot, isn't there? That's plenty of room on the team."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] ella-obeys.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Two spots," Ella nodded. "And you know you just talked me into trying, don't you?" She grinned at him. "May the best person win. Especially if she's me."

"I'm glad. It's no fun if there aren't a bunch of people to beat for the job," Dick said. He was going to have to talk to Ned and see if the bake sale they discussed could be turned into a Grayson for Student Council thing.

"Are you always so confident?" Ella asked. "It might bite you, you know."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] laidanegg.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"I tend to be," Dick said. "And I'm confident that I'll be able to bounce back after getting bitten, so that doesn't scare me."

Ella was a little more serious when she answered. "That's a good way to be."

[identity profile] laidanegg.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
"It comes from the whole acrobat thing, I think," Dick said. "That drills confidence into you from day one. If you're not sure of yourself way up there, you shouldn't be up there."

"Right, or ..." She made a hand gesture that suggested falling, complete with "k'shewww" noise. "I'm not great with heights."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] laidanegg.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Dick said, cringing a little at the sound effect. "Heights aren't all that bad. The hard part is just getting used to them."
