The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"What, like get him to hook up with someone?" Claire asked. She sounded intrigued.

"The guy obviously needs to get laid," Chuck said, nodding.

"No kidding," Claire commented. "So are you another new-ish person, or have you been here a while?"

"I've been here since the summer. So not really new but I'm not completely accustomed to all the, ah--" Chuck pointed at a skunk that was currently throwing up off the side of the boardwalk.

"Oh gross," Claire said, wrinkling her nose in distaste. "It was bad enough when they were just following me and asking if my hair was real."

She was starting to get a sense about Chuck. "So you aren't a narc, right?"

Chuck let out a little laugh at that and wished Blair had heard that. "God, no! No. Definitely not a narc."

Claire had never really done this part before, and it made her nervous. She jittered a little as she spoke "So ... I couldn't really bring anything on the plane and I think this place requires a little grass. Is there anyone I could talk to?"

"You happen to be talking to the right person," Chuck said, looking extremely pleased. Hot and she liked to have fun. There really was nothing better. "Never leave home without it."

"I think you might be my new best friend," Claire informed him.

"I'm always glad to help out a friend in need," he said. He looked around the party. "What would you say to me helping you out in a more private setting?"

"Probably a better idea," Claire conceded. The island was weird, but that didn't make the laws different. "Do you know a place?"

"Well, I've never had a problem doing my, ah, extracurricular activities in my room before," he said. "The school is pretty laid-back about that sort of stuff as long as you're not doing it out in the open, I think."

Chuck thought that this might have been the first time he had a true, good excuse to invite a girl in his room that wasn't immediately about sex. He hoped to turn it into that eventually. First things first though.

"Your roommate must be cool," Claire said wistfully. "Mine is that girl in the scarf." She gestured to Penelope. "She just seems all sweet and naive and it makes me think I'm gonna corrupt her."

She smiled crookedly. "Lead the way, Chuck."
