Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"Oh, I would love to be out in the rain," Penelope said, eyes wide and sparkling. "I've always imagined it; playing in the rain."

"Have you never?" Ned asked curiously.

She shook her head. "No, never. I would like to feel it on my tongue and blink as it clings to my lashes. I could twirl around too, just for fun."

"Oh, wow," Ned said. Someone probably more sheltered than him. "It's rained a few times here. Sometimes really hard. The drops are big and wet."

"And you get drenched!" she exclaimed, clasping her hands in front of her chest. Of course, she couldn't play like she would want to, not if anyone else was around. But the thought of doing so was so very enticing.

"I hope to catch it one day."

"You get soaked," he agreed with a chuckle. "If you haven't seen rain, you probably haven't seen snow either?"

"I've seen it, yes, but nothing more than that," she admitted. "Have you seen it, in person?"

"Not lately but yeah," he said and nodded. "I used to live in a place that got a lot of snow. Sometimes knee deep."

"I'm from England so we do get snow, but I was just never allowed outside to play in it." Penelope couldn't imagine being in snow that came to her knees.

"Did you go to a boarding school?" Ned wondering since that sounded so familiar.

Penelope shook her head. "I was homeschooled."

"I went to a boarding school," he shared. "It wasn't much fun. Not like this place. But, I lived there so I had to stay."

"I lived at home, so I had to stay there," she replied rather lamely. "With my family, of course."

"Well, family's...good," Ned said, managing to force that out. "Right?"

"Mhm," she murmured. Penelope's certainly meant well. Especially her mother.

"Is your family good?"

"They're not really...around," he said and shrugged, trying to seem nonchalant.

"Oh, I'm very sorry if that was a wrong question."

"Oh, no," he said quickly, wincing. "No, that's not your fault. And it's okay, really. I just don't have...a lot to say about them."

"Sometimes that happens," she nodded. "But I do hope it is not from the fact that they were mean to you."

"No," Ned said, waving that off and pushing the truth far out of his mind. "No, it was just a circumstance. And it led me here and I like this place, amazingly."

"One who bakes so many pies for everyone, should, I would think," she replied, smiling.

"Well..." He laughed quietly. "It wasn't always like that but I've grown to like it here."

"You seem content and happy so I easily believe you," she said. "It should become that way for me too, I hope. One can never tell what my mother will do. She could collect me home tomorrow if she wanted. I shouldn't get too comfortable."

"I think that could happen to everyone," he said, trying to reassure her. "Enjoy what time you have. I read that on a greeting card once."

She laughed. "I knew I heard it from somewhere."
