Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

Lola blinked a little at the bluntness, but went with it. "It's German. I was saying that boy," she pointed ~~handwavily~~ to one of the guys, "would look very nice without a shirt."

Helen looked over and nodded. "Yes. I'd have to agree."

"German..." she shook her head. "It's not one I learned, but it sounds very familiar."

"Ja? Which languages do you know? I also know a little French."

Helen rattled off a large number of ~~handwavy~~ languages. None of which, other than English, was probably familiar to anyone in this world.

Lola blinked. "Uh. That's a lot of languages."

Helen shrugged. "All I've done since I was five is study. Languages, history... All the knowledge of the wider times. Well, until they exiled me at least."

"What are, uh, the 'wider times'?"

"The way the worlds used to be before They came and changed everything." She looked a bit fierce.

"But they did not bother this world from what little I have seen."

"I haven't heard of them, so I think they didn't. What are they?"

"A type of demon," Helen explained. "We - the other Homeward Bounders and myself and some others killed most of them and drove the others away."

"You are a demon killer." Interesting. "You must be very strong."

"They are not so hard if you know how," Helen said. "But I do have an advantage. My right arm... I can make it into a Living Knife that will kill a demon of any size or strength."

Lola's eyes widened. "That would be a big help, ja. Is it magic?"

Helen shrugged. "Maybe? It's part of me, has been since I was born. But magical in some way probably. And I am a cleric and magic user."

"There is a lot of magic in your world, I think."

"I suppose," Helen said. "Not as much as here, though."

"There is maybe too much magic, here. Makes it hard, when you aren't magic."

Helen considered that. "I suppose you are right. I hadn't thought of that."

Lola shrugged. "It isn't bad, but . . . I wonder if I will not fit in so well, since I don't have any magic."

"Oh, there are many here who are not magical at all," Helen assured her. "Rodney? Not a speck of magic. And he does... well enough. And there are many many others."
