The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"Jan!" Molly greeted him with a wild wave, possibly oversugared. "Did you try the pie? Can you have pie? How're things? Are you settled in?"

"Hello, Molly!" he called back, happy to see a familiar face. "Isn't this a beauitful gathering? I haven't had pie, but I am settling in well."

"Would you like some? I had a slice of the oatmeal apple spice thing earlier, and it was really good. I could get you a piece, if there's some left, if you want." She realized something. "Where do you sleep?"

"Please!" Jan looked at her fondly, because she was like a new weaned filly. "I sleep in a room in the dorms, with Dor. You have a lot of energy tonight."

"Hang on," she said, leaving and coming back in a few minutes with a slice of pie on a plate. No fork, obviously. "There's lots of sugar in pie. Normally I'm not like this, but I had to try a couple of flavors...No, I mean, do you sleep in a bed, or do you have someplace else?"

He stretched out to sniff the pie, then lipped at it cautiously. It was good! "My big sibling Ino took the bed apart and moved it out of the room so I could sleep on the mattress."

Molly tried to hold the plate steady. "Oh, I like Ino. She's very friendly, and that was extremely nice of her."

He took another bite of pie, carefully, because it was messy and he didn't want to knock the plate out of Molly's hands. "She is nice and very patient. I ask her a lot of questions."

"I do too," she confided. "Maybe she's the welcoming committee."

"She has made me very welcome." Jan busied himself eating, and it was astonishing how quickly a large unicorn could inhale a piece of pie.

Wow. Okay, so maybe he should have had a pie to himself. "I bet Ned's got more? And I'm glad. It must be kind of tough, being the only unicorn here."

Jan's ears drooped and he left off licking the plate. "I try not to think about it. There is nothing I can do to change anything, and until my memory returns, I cannot find a way home. To dwell on it will change nothing."

"There must be lots of stuff to occupy your mind here, right? Like..." She foundered for a minute. "Classes! How are your classes going?"

Re: Mingle!

"They are going well, I think, and I will be helping one of the teachers," he said proudly. "I am a teaching assistant."

"Oh, that's wonderful, Jan! For which class?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] firebringerborn.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
"The class on caring for magical creatures," he replied. "We were given eggs to care for."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I know! I can't wait to see what's inside the eggs, can you?"

Re: Mingle!

He shuffled his front feet, because he'd had a specific reason for mentioning them. "Yes...Molly, can I ask you if you would help me with mine? I can turn it with my horn, but it needs clever human hands to make sure it is healthy and safe."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
She hadn't thought of that. "Of course I can, Jan. That's not a problem."
