Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

Shikamaru had no idea there was a party. In fact he had come out for some peace and quiet. AND SOMEONE WAS HAVING A PARTY IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS PEACE AND QUIET.

He was not amused.

To say that she wasn't expecting to see him was rather an understatement.

"N-Nara-san?"

Shikamaru blinked... and stared...

"Hey, Hinata."

Wow... he had forgotten how young she had been.

"I w-wasn't aware y-you were in t-town," she said, smiling. "A-Are you here f-for long?"

"Yeah," Shikamaru sighed. "That crazy old lady said at least a couple of months."

She had hinted at longer, but he didn't like to think about that part.

She considered him for a moment.

"A-At least y-you will be s-spared having to r-run many missions?" she offered. "F-Fandom is f-fairly p-peaceful on t-the whole."

Shika's eyes widened, then he grinned. "That sounds nice. I can watch some clouds... get some rest."

He tilted his head, "So what are you doing here, anyway?"

Hinata had rather thought that that would appeal to him. "I'm s-sure you'll e-enjoy that."

"A-Ano," she flushed a bit. "F-Father sent m-me here in h-hopes of h-having to spend t-time in a c-completely different environment w-would increase m-my confidence."

"Oh yeah?" Shikamaru smiled just a bit. "And how's that going?"

"I've j-joined a p-play that is b-being put on," she mused. "A-And I o-obtained e-employment w-without anyone p-pulling strings. F-Father would not c-consider it a huge i-improvement, but I'm r-rather pleased."

"Hey, good for you!" Shikamaru sounded genuinely pleased. "You've gotta start somewhere, after all."

She blushed. "It's a s-start," Hinata said. "T-Though I've n-not done s-so well at t-talking to the new p-people."

Shikamaru, for all that he wasn't her Shikamaru, didn't count as a new person.

"Well, what's stopping you?" he asked. As if he didn't know that she was painfully shy.

She flushed horribly and stared at her feet. "A-Ano..."

He knew he shouldn't tease her, but... "Is there something on your shoes?" he asked, bending over to look.

Her blush deepened. "Nara-san!" Dismayed.

"What?" he asked not-at-all innocently.

"Y-You, y-you... t-that's just awful of y-you, teasing m-me like that..."

There was a smile somewhere under all the blushing.

"Wow, Hinata," Shikamaru laughed, "You really have grown. I mean, you just called me on teasing you."

He really was impressed.

She blushed. "T-There's a lot of p-people who've b-been h-helping me."

"Yeah? Well you'll have to introduce me to some of them."

"I w-will," she promised. "A-And you'll h-have to meet Yei--she's m-my kitten."

"You have a kitten?" Shikamaru blinked.

She had gotten a lot better.

A nod. "F-For a few m-months now, I b-believe," Hinata said. "S-She's terribly f-friendly and clever."

"So a lot like her owner, huh?" he teased.
