The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"I can make pancakes exactly according to the recipe and make them taste like tar sludge," Jen said with a touch of envy. "You should be proud of yourself. These are seriously amazing."

"I don't think I've ever had tar sludge pancakes," he said and snickered. "And thank you. I'm just glad people like them. And will take some home so I'm not living off pie for weeks."

"Hey," Jen said, feigning insult and completely failing at it after about half a second. "I didn't actually put tar sludge in them! And I guess I'd be failing in my big sister duties if I didn't offer to take some of those . . . really, really good-looking . . . pies off your hands at the end of the night so you don't drown in them. If there's any left. In which case I might have to start interrogating people about why."

"I didn't think you did," he said hurriedly. "I mean, I bet the tar sludge was excellent and sludge...y."

Ned tried to cover that up by saying, "You can as much home as you'd like! I made too much I think. But the Blair girl wasn't precise and I didn't want anyone not to get a piece."

"No, trust me, I wouldn't wish those pancakes on my worst enemy," Jen assured him. "And that one with the oatmeal and the nuts looks great. I might take some of that."

She paused and gave him a look. "I'm still not convinced there'll be any left. Just as long as the skunks don't get to it, I wouldn't worry."

"If the skunks get to it, I might cry." He paused. "I really might!"

"No, no, no," Jen said hurriedly, "no crying! I tried to sort of arrest one earlier, and that didn't work, but I can come up with some way to keep them away if I have to!"

She seriously had no idea what she would do if he cried. There might be flailing. People skills? So not her forte.

"You tried to arrest a squirrel?" Ned's crying was forgotten. "What happened?"

"He was drunk! In public!" Jen exclaimed. "It was habit, I couldn't help it, and then . . ."

She didn't finish the sentence, but the shudder said a lot.

"Oh no," Ned said and winced. "Are you okay now?"

"I showered," Jen said grimly. "A lot. So yeah, I'm okay now."

"Oh, good," Ned said and smiled in relief. "I've avoided the skunks so far. Or they've been nice and avoided me."

"Obviously they were hoping to charm you into giving them a pie," Jen teased. "And it's good to see you're taking the whole random skunks thing in stride."

"Well, if I saw one, things might change from in stride to me running away," Ned said and winced. "I don't wanna get sprayed."
