Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"Well... see my talent is basically considered a magician caliber talent," Dor explained. "Other people in Xanth usually have minor magic. Like making small spots appear on walls or changing their hair color or something like that. Since I'm the only magician in my generation and no one else is apparent I'm... um. Going to be king. Someday."

Dor didn't look like he was looking forward to that.

"Whoa." She'd never met an almost king before. "You, uh, don't look thrilled."

"It can be a lot of pressure," Dor explained. "It's a little hard to live up to at times."

"How many people will you rule?"

"Maybe a couple of thousand," Dor estimated. "Not counting the magical creatures as they have their own heirarchy but if we get invaded again it'd be up to me to-"

Dor gulped at this point.

"Lead."

"Do you have experience? Or, are there classes you could take or something?"

"I've been groomed for the position since I was born," Dor said with a shrug. "And I led the defense of a castle and have learned a few things but I don't know if I'll ever be ready to take on the role or not."

He shrugged. "I'm taking a class here on leadership. Maybe that will help. How did you end up here in Fandom?"

Molly supposed she couldn't blame Dor for wanting to change the subject. "My dad got someone else's brochure and decided to send me here."

"Really?" Dor asked. "So it was just a coincidence that you ended up here? Did you know about the whole nexus of worlds thing?"

"Nexus of huh?" That would probably be a big no on Molly's part. "And yeah, my dad's life is kind of full of coincidences."

"Is that his talent?" Dor asked. "Because my Mom seems to think my father has something like that."

"One of them, maybe?" She wasn't sure if it counted as his or His. "Why? What can your dad do?"

"I'm not sure," Dor said. "Things just seem to happen to him that no one can explain. No one is really sure what his magic is but everyone is sure he has it."

"Good things, I hope?"

"Well nothing has killed him yet so that's always a good thought."

"I would say so, yes!" She giggled. "I always like it when my dad comes home in one piece, too."

"What does your dad do?" Dor asked curiously. "Is he a wizard?"

Molly leaned in, lowering her voice to a whisper. "He's a Knight of the Cross."

Dor looked completely baffled.

"I know what a knight is but I don't know what you're talking about."

"Basically?" Yeah, this was definitely where she started to sound a little bit nuts. She should have just said her dad was a salesman or something. "He kind of fights for...God. With a sword."
