Winter Carnival | All Day | The Park | January 31 [Post #1]

It was a new day and there was no better way to start a new day than with the continuation of the carnival. There was still snow coating the ground but the atmosphere was as lively as ever. With cream-colored decorations and twinkling lights, the Student Council had aimed for a winter wonderland kind of theme, and the snow simply added to the effect. Thankfully, the day was turning out to be warmer, so those who were going to be outside all day wouldn't freeze. Once the finishing touches were done, the carnival was open for business.

"I didn't ask that," Alex pointed out, a little sharper than before. "Avoidance would be an unspoken admittance of something. I asked if you didn't want to talk to me."

"No," she said, eyes on her food for the moment. "I don't not want to talk to you." Mm, double negatives.

Alex was going to end up with a headache after this conversation, he was sure of it. He managed to keep from rubbing his temple though.

"I'm pretty sure you were intent on doing something to me." Yesterday. He left that unspoken. "Or maybe not because that would mean making an unnecessary effort for someone else."

Now it was Effy's turn to be puzzled. "I was?" Okay, yes, they'd had... some vague plans that had fallen by the wayside somewhere. Still.

She'd already proven that putting effort in for him was something she was willing to do.

"You weren't?" he asked, throwing the question right back at her. "So, you weren't thinking of me at all recently?"

Alex decided he'd go the vague route since he was making assumptions left and right because he was a jerk and a stupid teenager. Maybe he'd hit something.

"Sure you crossed my mind." Or more than just crossed, but...

"Don't just fall off my radar when I'm not talking to you." Unfortunate, in a way, since she did catch things here and there, then did her very best to distance herself from them.

"And you don't think the same goes for me?" he asked, crossing his arms more to keep them still than anything else. "Or do you know it goes that way and use it to your advantage?"

Had her suspicions, yeah, and glanced across at him, finally.

"Sounds like you're getting at something."

"Did you see me yesterday?" he asked, just taking a guess since he'd seen her.

"I saw you." Not much point trying to deny that, and dodging around it was only going to show more than she wanted to. They were at the same carnival, it was hardly surprising there'd be some crossover.

Alex nodded tightly. "So, what did you see me doing?" He had a guess there but he also had the 'it wasn't what it looked like' explanation on his side even if it almost had been.

Not that he was sure he'd use that, pansy excuse that it was, but it was there.

They didn't have any rules attached to this. Hardly needed to use an excuse at all. Nothing for her to object to. Rarely was going to be any logic attached to a sting of jealousy.

"Just looked busy," she answered vaguely, and shrugged. "Can't just be loitering and smoking every time spot you, right?"

No, he didn't need an excuse but the reasons for it were something she'd probably need to hear. Or something he was going to tell her anyway since she couldn't stop doubting him.

"What did you see, Effy?" he asked tightly. "Quit being vague."

Effy barely repressed her immediate inclination to roll her eyes. "Had a girl in your lap," she said finally. "So?" He was allowed to.

"Yeah, I did. Emma climbed into my lap," he said, nodding. "You see anything else but that? Or was that it?"

"Had a carnival to make the most of," she said, in explanation. "Didn't really stick around." He could do what he wanted, didn't mean she needed to see any of it, thanks.

"Right. Let's just get to the crux of this continued issue," Alex said, thinning his lips. "You saw me with another girl. You think I left the carnival and screwed her or something? Come on, let's hear what you think."

"What issue," she threw back. "You're the one turning it into that." Effy would've been perfectly content to leave it well alone and pretend she'd seen nothing.

"I want to know what you think I did," Alex snapped, ignoring her question for the moment. "You saw me, you know me, so let's hear it."

"Think it's a kissing booth," she said simply, snagging a little more spun sugar between her fingers. "Generally get what you pay for." In her experience, anyway.

"Yeah, I'm sure you'd know that since I got to see you pay for it," Alex said, keeping his voice calm but stiff. "What you wanted, right? Make me see that?"

Effy huffed a humorless laugh. "Wasn't for your benefit." Half-decent distraction for her, though.

Hadn't been especially discreet, but at the same time, not planning a show. Assumed he was busy elsewhere anyway.

"Hear it's tradition." Not one where she was from, sure. But she'd done it before.

"Please, you knew I was there, I'm sure I factored into that decision," he retorted quickly before just stepping back and shaking his head.

"You know what, fuck this," he added sharply. "I hate what I sound like right now. I fucking hate it. And I hate what I feel like. That girl climbed into my lap but that was it. I didn't kiss her, I didn't screw her. I talked to her. Because I made a promise to a friend and because I knew you were around and I kept thinking about you."

Or, well, he kept hiding her because he hadn't wanted Emma to see. Same difference, she was still on his mind. He still sounded like a fucking a pansy. "I think I'm done with you always thinking the worst of me though. I'm done with it."

"And you're just full of the sweetest assumptions about me right now." Thinking the worst was just going around, wasn't it? Decided she'd been trying to make him jealous? Taste of what she was getting?

"Goes two ways."

There were worse ways than a couple of moments losing herself in the kiss of a stranger.

"I'm trying not to assume but you haven't really denied anything" Alex replied, gesturing with his hand. "I just told you what you saw."

"Obviously something's tilted here," Alex replied, trying to ignore that little stinger. "I thought about you because I couldn't not. And I didn't want to do anything with someone else. If you thought about me, it didn't make a difference. So, what's that tell you?"
