Summer Dance/Gala Event | Evening | Saturday | June 19

As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

"It's all festive," his date bounced. She couldn't finish a sentence and not bounce. It was a thing.

Also, if anyone expected her dress to not be loud, they must not have ever met her before.

"And I've got the hottest date here," she added, leaning up to steal a kiss. She was a thief. She could steal kisses with the best of them.

Oh, yeah, like he was going to try to keep this particular thief from stealing a kiss. Honestly, now.

"I'm afraid you're wrong there, yo," he decided, once the requisite amount of nibbling on Rikku's lower lip had been met. "Hottest date here is wearin' this mostly purple number. Fulla little sparkly things, zoto."

Those would be sequins, Reno. And rhinestones. And other assorted beadwork.

"I like the bottom of it," Rikku laughed. "It twirls out when I spin!"

To demonstrate, she took his hands, danced a couple of steps, then let him spiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin her out! Which, naturally, meant she needed to spiiiiiiiiin back in, too.

"I can't believe you're wearing a tie," she added. "It's so weird, seeing you in one."

Not that she was complaining.

"You mean, in one that ain't shaped like a fish, right?"

Look, it matched the wedding ring that looked like a tire. In its own special way.

"They keep tryin' to tell me this is how the suit is supposed to be worn, yo. I think they're lyin' to me, to be honest."

"I think you look dashing," she insisted. "Not as much with the fish-tie. Should I have worn the bubble-dress? It's kinda slutty."

And tacky. And when Rikku thought something was tacky ...

"At least they let you wear it however you want," she added. And, on a completely different note, "Is there still that duck in your bathroom?"

It was possibly a miracle, but Reno was actually learning how to switch the gears in his brain so that he could follow Rikku's weird little tangents.

It had taken a few years. But he'd gotten there, eventually.

"Yeah," he agreed with a snort. "Tried chasin' it out the other day, but it wasn't havin' none of it, yo. Hunkered down in the tub and make these angry, like... huffin' motions, or some shit."

Yes. Reno had been bested by a duck.

Some birds were not to be trifled with.

"You don't think Petey will eat it, do you?" she asked.

And then, considering the situation, "Or that he'll eat Petey!?"

Look, it was one fierce duck, okay?

"I think it'd have a hell of a time tryin' to chew on Petey," Reno pointed out, shrugging dismissively. "He ain't eaten Mako yet, and Mako's just as much of a dumbass as your cat is, yo."

He was. It was one of Mako's many skills.

"Maybe they'll make friends," Rikku suggested, displaying her very own shockingly naive interpretation of the food chain. But, hey, interspecies friendships could work out.

"So ... are you here as a chaperone?" she teased. "Does that mean we can't make out in one of the dark corners?"

Reno snorted and rolled his eyes.

"This ain't no school dance, babe," he pointed out. "I'm here as a guest, yo. Which means we can make out in dark corners all we want."

Which was probably a good idea, because it distracted him from the fact that he'd officially banned himself from spiking the punch at all functions that his students might attend. Pretending to be responsible or something.

"It'd be setting a bad example," she noted. "Then all your students would be led astray. Is that what you want?"

Because, if so, she was all about the dark corners. Just saying.

"You really think my students need me to lead 'em astray?"

And anyhow, they were dark corners. The whole point was to be able to hang out in them, in the darkness, doing things that could not be seen. Because of the dark.

Which was not terribly light!

"You're saying you have nothing to teach your students about misbehaving?" she teased. "I can't believe that. You're supposed to talk about how these whippersnappers don't measure up."

"Hey. Hey, now. I never said nothin' about them bein' able to measure up, yo. Just that they ain't perfect little angels, either." There was a very important distinction between the two, if you asked Reno. "They got a hell of a long way to go before they can hold a match to me, zoto."

He was only mostly bragging.

She was not currently talking to Reno. But that wasn't going to stop her from covertly checking out his arrival and the... girl... that he came with.

Rosalind resisted the urge to take a picture. Reno had a girlfriend: he had not been lying.

She could barely believe her eyes. Maybe it was something in the water...?

"Hi," Rikku bounced, pulling away from Reno in order to chatter at the new girl. "Oooooh, I like the suit! Are you a Turk, too?"

Reno had mentioned some of his rookies showing up! This must be one of them!

Rosalind blinked at the bouncy blonde with bemusement in her eyes.

"I am," she said evenly. The girl was with Reno so lying was pointless. "Forgive my staring, I didn't mean to be rude."

"Oh, that's fine," Rikku said. "I don't mind the staring. I get that a lot."

Really. This was a boring, drab outfit, by her usual standard.

"I'm Rikku," she said, holding her hand out. "Pleased to meetcha. I'm kinda Reno's girlfriend? I don't know if he ever mentioned me."

And, okay, she was curious if he had. So sue her.

Rosalind reached to shake the offered hand, still more--caught off-guard than anything else.

"He's mentioned you," she said, trying a faint smile on for size. Rosalind figured it was probably diplomatic to not mention that she'd not believed him. "I'm Rosalind." Of the Turks. "He considers me one of his rookies."

She considered herself more of one of Tseng's Rookies, push come to shove.

"He considers everyone one of his rookies," Rikku said, eyes twinkling. "Adopts them and then growls at anything that even looks funny at them. It's really cute, you know?"

Thus marking what was possibly the first time anyone used cute in conjunction with Reno in Rosalind's hearing.

Ow. Ow. That was her mind shying away from the idea.

"Cute?" she blurted. "Reno?"

A jerk, yes. Physically appealing, yes. But--cute?

"It is," Rikku insisted with a laugh. "He gets all 'NO ONE TOUCH MY ROOKIES OR YOU DIE.' What, you never get to see him like that? He's such a dork."

"He watches us while we work," Rosalind said dubiously. "That's not quite the same thing."

Rikku looked very, very skeptical. "I've seen him with rookies before," she explained. "It's more mama bear than that. Or papa bear. Don't tell him I called him a mom. Or I guess you can tell him. It'd be funny, watching him get grumpy about it."

Rosalind might have realized by now that Reno's girlfriend was insane.

She had, just a bit.

"He follows us around, on jobs, without revealing himself until we get into more trouble than he thinks we can handle. That is not--any sort of papa bear."

Her brain, it hurt.
