Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and octopuses octopi octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

Jan gave him a look that implied there would be boy bands if she deemed them necessary to his education and there was nothing you could do to stop her. "Have fun at the dance, boys."

Tony was resigned to his fate there. Resigned to it as he sort of latched onto the back of Steve's jacket. "Talk to you later."

"Bye!" Steve said obliviously, turning the phone off. "That was nice of her."

"Very nice," Tony agreed, smiling back at him because that was what he did. "Would you get us some drinks?"

Because his phone was now blowing up in his pocket.

And it would give him time to answer Jan without causing a scene. Because she was still texting. She might have not stopped since the call ended.

"I'll be back in a little while, then," Steve promised with a little grin. "Don't get into too much trouble."

Tony waited until he was gone to read through the messages and type back 'it's still new', 'I don't know yet', and 'yes, it's amazing.' In that exact order.

Which seemed to pacify her a little.

Steve came back juggling two cups of definitely spiked punch and a fairly full plate of nibbly things. "They had sushi," he said, "but I passed on that."

Which meant Tony had to lean in to kiss him on the cheek as he took one of those drinks off his hands. "So, uh. Quick question. How do you want to handle our friends?"

"Well, if they're not going to be okay with it, they're not really our friends, right?" Steve asked in reply. "We should tell them."

Okay, that made Tony relax a little. "So, we're... boyfriends?" He made a face. "God, I feel like I'm fifteen. I'm sorry."

"There needs to be a better word for it," Steve said, "but...yes. We're friends with kissing."

That wasn't a better word for it, Steve.

God, there really weren't better words here. Because the unironic use of 'lovers' would make Tony die on the inside.

"I like that definition of it," Tony said, perking right up. "So, expect a shovel speech from Jan in the future. She does that sometimes."
