Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday

"Hey, guys, that's really great," Zack said, forcing a little bit of a smile at the troupe of singing gremlins who had parked their way just inside the shelter's door. They were singing their hardest, doing their best, and while the dogs and cats and fish didn't seem to care much for their singing either way, the birds were doing their best to... well, not sing along, per se. But definitely to try to sing over them.

And Zack, being Zack, felt it was important to encourage their creativity.

And, uh, to not get bitten.

So he was standing at the counter making busy work for himself, looking as attentive as he possibly could. He was making a sign:

Thinking of Giving a Pet for Christmas?
Please, Think Twice!
There will be no adoptions until the New Year, thank you!

If he could help it, he was never having a repeat of the Easter Bunnies again. If anybody saw an animal here they wanted that badly, they could definitely be patient enough to wait until January to bring it home.

Turtle & Canary; Monday [12/03].

There was, it would seem, at least one place on the island where you could turn something and not get eggnog, because it would seem that not even the power of the holiday strangeness could overcome the pure persistence of the Squishy machine.

Of course, one could easily argue that what you were getting from that one nozzle wasn't a whole lot better.

And Astrid had, at one point during her shift, given into the temptation of combining the two, an experiment that did not end up well for her at all, but, at the same time, she did not regret a thing.

If anyone needed her, she was easy to find at the counter, filling her sketchbook with pictures of reindeer, coloring them with borrowed teal pencils and crayons.

Nina breezed into the bookstore and stopped, eyeing the blond who eyed her right back, distaste already clear in his expression.

"Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!" she said, like this was some sort of surprise at all. (It really wasn't.) "I know who you are!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're the other blond who does my radio slot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

He grimaced. "You can have it," he said flatly. "What are you doing here?"

"I quit my other job," Nina said, setting her bag down on the counter and heading around behind it. "Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your dog is adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And weird. Definitely weird. That was a tentacle. But she didn't miss the way that the guy thawed slightly at the dog's compliment.

"He--what are you doing?!"

Nina sat down on the other stool. "What's it look like?????????????? I'm now co-owner here!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice to meet you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"What? No."

The beach, late Monday afternoon

Rufus had said he had lightning "spells" of some sort, and Lana was curious about them, so she'd showed up to the beach to compare notes. And lightnings.

This could be very interesting.

And if Rufus didn't show, well - a beach was still a fairly novel experience for Lana, so she was going to remove her boots, roll up her leggings, and see what the water felt like on her feet.

[OOC: Open beach, open post! Come meet the Sith or just hang out.]

In and Around the Woods, Sunday Afternoon

The shadows didn't want to budge. They liked it here, and they liked their toys, and maybe they would like to reach out, sometime, and bring in more...

Because the island would let them do that, wouldn't it?

It would be oh-so-cosy.

[[ FINALE POST! ocd up. ]]

Book Haven, Wednesday

Dark Nation curled up with the dust bunnies? Check.

Papier mache supplies and written off books? Check.

Rufus was almost sorry he couldn't go around to see what all the other stores were doing today, but on the other hand… he got to abstain with a good reason from having to do anything ridiculous this week.

And, he supposed, between anyone who stopped in, and radio tomorrow, he'd have a decent idea of what had gone on anyway.

Book Haven is Open!

The Beach, Thursday Afternoon

The weather was pleasant and Dark Nation was antsy, which had led to Rufus leaving his work and taking his dog out for a long run around the island and then, since Dark Nation had still been energetic, Rufus had found himself on the beach, throwing a Frisbee for Dark Nation to race after like a maniac as the waves lapped at the shore.

The pollen still wasn't bothering him. Too bad, island.

While Dark Nation was chasing the Frisbee, Rufus sent off a couple of texts.

A text from Rufus of all people was likely not what Zack was expecting while out on holidays.

Fair. An associate and I are doing something exceedingly hazardous this weekend. Might I borrow a summons or two?

That was about as polite as Rufus ever got. Be impressed, Zack. Rufus had asked.

The other was much more his usual speed, and to his babysitter: I’m invading a hostile world this weekend to steal a computer.

Then he had to wrestle the Frisbee away from Dark Nation to toss it again.

[Open, yo!]

Book Haven, Tuesday

One of these days Tseng was going to catch on to the fact that Rufus wasn't on the island all the times he said he was.

But, if he'd noticed already, he hadn't said anything.

Which was half the battle.

In the spirit of a fickle whim, Rufus wandered into his shop today to actually work. Dark Nation, of course, went barrelling after the dust bunnies.

Rufus didn't actually want to know how many there were these days.

Book Haven, Tuesday

Rufus frowned slightly as he leaned back in his chair and, rather than work on putting the bookshop in order (it wasn't that bad off anyway), caught up on news back home.

Most of it was rather bland, carefully cut and dried to present the right image, but Rufus had access to more information than other people did and he could read between the lines.

AVALANCHE was becoming more of a problem for his father.

Rufus didn't smile.

That was what they were paid to do, after all. It'd be a shame if they had let him down.

Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday

Zack was in a pretty okay mood today at work, and he was spending his shift running his errands around the shop, telling Girl (who was basically his dog now and he was okay accepting that) all about his reasons for it. Sure, she didn't really understand the finer details, but she wasn't exactly complaining about the attention, or the fact that Zack was doing better today than he had been in a while. Every time he'd look her way, she'd give him an encouraging tail wag, and when he wasn't looking her way she was right at his side, pressing the warm weight of her body encouragingly against his leg.

Karla had really been on to something, bringing the trained therapy dogs here for him to find homes for.

Tseng had really been on to something, getting the animal shelter, of all places, for Zack to run, after everything.

He was feeling up to the 'actually dealing with the people' side of the job today too, so Zack put a Now Hiring sign in the window. Why not share the love, right?

And, uh, they probably actually needed more staff anyway.

[OOC: Open!]

Book Haven, Tuesday

Rufus had… received a voicemail.

He was rather bemused by it, honestly, since as far as calls he usually received that was the politest invitation he'd ever had to go talk to someone.

As he went through this week's orders, he leaned over to peer down at Dark Nation and, yes, his dog's dust bunny friends. "What do you think?" he inquired. "Should I be polite and visit?"

Dark Nation yawned.

That was what he got for asking his dog's opinion Rufus supposed.

Book Haven is Open.

The Boards, Thursday Evening

The marquee outside of the Boards, Groovy Tunes, whatever Jono was calling it these days was blinking the words 'KARAOKE NIGHT – FREE BOOZE AND SNACKS' in neon-bright colours.

Ino was pretty proud of herself for figuring out how to do that, especially since she was running on absolutely zero sleep. See, despite it being Jono's store/theatre unholy hybrid, he had no damn idea this was happening tonight.

Or that it was mostly his booze she was planning on giving to people for free.

(Ino had bought the snacks; Jono hadn't had enough of those around.)

Sure, it had been supposed to be a small thing, like, just her, Kanan, and Hera but why not turn it into a party?

And singing karaoke on an actual stage in an actual theatre would be pretty sweet too.

While killing time until her guests showed up, Ino fiddled with the lights, looking for the best way to light the stage and trying to decide if she could rig up a disco ball or not. There probably wasn't time. (Maybe next time.)

Because Ino was a brat, and a Turk, and that meant getting the numbers of every single person on the island was child's play, she'd sent a text to everyone on the island—except Jono and Dr. Lecter, since she was pretty sure Dr. Lecter would rat her out to Jono—inviting them out to have a good time.

Karaoke party at the Boards tonight!

If all of Jono's booze wasn't gone by the end of the night, she'd make sure it disappeared conveniently.

Sorry not sorry, Jono!

Book Haven, Tuesday

Rufus was in a foul mood as he restocked shelves at Book Haven. The store itself wasn't the cause of it, and Dark Nation wasn't either--though Rufus did spare a baleful glance at where his dog was making friends with the dust bunnies--no, the problem was that he'd had terrible dreams where the most interesting thing had been a virtual reality fishing game.

And he'd woken up feeling off-balance and obscurely disappointed by the appearance of a strange person in a super hero outfit at the end of it all.

Ugh.

None of it made any sense and that left him cranky. Maybe plotting would help soothe his irritation away.

Book Haven is Open.

Book Haven, Tuesday

Two classes on Monday meant that Rufus was changing his working hours again.

Hello, Tuesdays.

They were much the same as Mondays anyway, when it came to business.

"Dark Nation," he said, leaning over the back of the chair his dog had decided to take a nap in, "you're supposed to kill the dust bunnies. Not sleep with them."

His dog didn't stir and one of the dust bunnies flicked its ears at him and yawned, showing off pointy teeth.

Well. That sure showed him.

Book Haven is Open.

Book Haven, Monday

The nice thing about being organized meant that, once the usual things were squared away--ordering new books, putting away the newest deliveries, making sure Dark Nation hadn't murdered a dust bunny and eaten half of it, leaving behind a carcass he'd have to clean up--Rufus could go back to his other work.

His father's investigation into the death of his third son was going nowhere.

This pleased Rufus and didn't surprise him.

Book Haven is Open.

Book Haven, Monday

It was amazing, really, how much there was to do after missing a week, but Rufus didn't mind. He preferred being busy, even if fussing over his store wasn't the most important thing he was juggling.

Dark Nation was just glad to be back and able to chase the dust bunnies out of hiding again.

"If you kill one," Rufus said, while ordering more books, "I expect you to eat it."

Dark Nation didn't answer him but Rufus hadn't expected that. His PHS rang and he answered it, eyes focused on his computer screen.

Yes, busy days suited him best.

Book Haven is Open.

Book Haven, Monday

Given that he was the owner, as far as he could tell, of Book Haven and the only employee besides, Rufus doubted there was anyone on or off the island who'd give a damn about him arbitrarily changing his shift to Mondays instead of Fridays.

Fridays just hadn't been working out for him, thanks to everything back home that was more important and interesting.

He supposed eventually he might have to put up a now hiring sign but then he'd have to deal with that hassle and, really, most days he'd rather cauterize his eyes than deal with people.

Hyperbolically. Obviously.

Book Haven is Open!

Book Haven, Friday

It was a quiet day at the book store.

Rufus didn't mind that as he made sure everything was in order, arranged for next week's delivery of new stock, and then settled at one of the chairs by the window to work on his laptop.

In short order Dark Nation had decided to join him, snoozing against his feet, and keeping them warm.

There were worse things than quiet.

Book Haven is Open.

Book Haven, Friday

Rufus had… fled the picnic as soon as he possibly could.

Work was a great excuse, it really was, and the book store was blessedly quiet and empty and decidedly not pink.

It also wasn't likely to hug him either.

Slowly, as those thoughts didn't curse the island into doing something to him, Rufus relaxed into his usual mindset, going through the online catalogues to see what he should be ordering for arrival next week.

Now and then, he wrestled Dark Nation's toy away from him and then lobbed it down one of the aisles for his dog to chase.

Book Haven is Open.

Book Haven, Friday

Rufus was smiling slightly as he came into work for the first time in, oh, ages. Some of his people back home had confirmed a few things that left him in a good mood.

Dark Nation bolted off to sniff at things, confused by the scent of cookies that was everywhere today, while Rufus busied himself with looking at the class options for the next semester.

Hm. Some could be interesting...

And some could be entertaining...
