Tea fixed everything.

Alluka was pretty sure that was true, between tea and cookies, that they held some sort of magical power of making the day brighter.

Not that the day had been bad or anything--for one, it was still pretty early when she got to work--but Alluka had woken up in a disgruntled mood for no discernable reason at all, the kind of mood that left her wishing she didn't know better than to get out and go to work these days, that maybe if she said a prayer and hid it would be better without effort on her part.

But she'd picked up Mr. Bubbles and gotten dressed and made it into work anyway.

And her tea really was making her feel better about the whole day. The cookies helped too.

Maybe in a bit she'd go try on clothes and see if that didn't banish the rest of her bad mood. It should. Clothes usually did. In fact, even just looking around the store she could see some pretty things…

Given that he was the owner, as far as he could tell, of Book Haven and the only employee besides, Rufus doubted there was anyone on or off the island who'd give a damn about him arbitrarily changing his shift to Mondays instead of Fridays.

Fridays just hadn't been working out for him, thanks to everything back home that was more important and interesting.

He supposed eventually he might have to put up a now hiring sign but then he'd have to deal with that hassle and, really, most days he'd rather cauterize his eyes than deal with people.

Hyperbolically. Obviously.

The staff at Luke's were all keeping an extra close eye on their boss today. It was about this time last year, after all, that he had unexpectedly turned into a wolverine in the middle of the dining room, and they wanted to be prepared.

Knowing the reason for it didn't make it any easier for Eliot to deal with, though.

"This time the year before that I got a dog," he pointed out. "I don't see you all gettin' ready for another magical puppy running around."

The busboy held up a tiny doggy shaped sweater with "Valentine Jr." stitched into it. Eliot growled.

"Omigosh," said the dishwasher, whacking the cook in the arm with the back of his hand. "Omigosh it's happening."

"It's alright, sir!" the cook announced. "We've got a whole frozen moose ready for you whenever you need it!"

"Seriously," said Eliot. "One of these days I am really going to fire all of you."

Today's specials
Chicken-fried elk tenders
Elk and zucchini meatballs with tomato sauce
Cowboy elk pizza

"You know," said the cook. "If you eat the whole thing now, you're not going to have anything when it's fur and claws time."

Luke's was open.

It was starting to get late out, but that really didn't bother Ino. She liked working nights—all Turks did, even those who bitched about them—and playing with formulae for perfumes in the backroom of her not-quite-open shop made her happy and comfortable.

It was a lot better than being… or well, better than dwelling on a lot of things that she hadn't really figured out how to work through.

Ino left the lights on in the front of the shop, the door unlocked, and with her long, long blonde hair braided up, she worked quietly, lavender and lilac and vanilla filling the air.

In the window was an illuminated sign that read:

Pick Your Poison
Opening Soon

The shop wasn't technically open yet, but… hey, she wasn't going to turn down anyone who was curious enough to pry now. So… sure, the shop was open.

For a certain definition of 'open'.

Shiemi was at work. And had been since early this morning. She had never realized Valentines Day was so much WORK. There were still stacks of orders to get out, lots more to build, and a truckload of flowers for EASTER had just arrived and needed tending to, preferably not where near the shamrocks that were due in a few hours.

In addition, the phone was ringing off the hook. Apparently they were the only florist who could deliver to multiple universes and planets? Who knew: "Yes mam, I understand, but... No ma'am, I am not refusing to serve you. I would never refuse someone flowers."

One alumni in particular had in fact been taking up a lot of her time today with multiple calls and last minute orders.

"But... No ma'am, I understand you're having a special guest. It's just that those flowers together in an arrangement like that, they can act as a curse and... Yes they are very pretty flowers, but it's what they... No ma'am we definitely do have them on hand. and in those colours. No I don't know who you are. Ah. ok. That's a very nice list of names!" Shiemi totally had no idea who the woman was. "Well, what if ma'am came into the store to see the arrangement first? I could show you what I... Oh. An uncharted desert island, I see." Shiemi sighed and took up her pencil again and began marking the order. It almost felt like she was casting a spell already. "Then this fourth one will be for delivery?"

It was going to be a late night. The countdown to Valentines Day said:

And a huge handmade potato-stamp sign on the window said:

Untitled-1-copy

Shiemi was probably going to be at the store all night trying to get orders ready, so... yeah. Flowers.
