The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of ~~judging~~ watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

Sam wasn't wearing anything gold either, letting the decorations be gold on their own. "I appreciate the support. I don't usually go to these things unless they're sponsored by the school," he admitted.

"I hear ya," Peter said. "Not that I hate parties, just that normally this kind isn't my thing."

"You don't have to stay if you don't want to," Sam said, wondering if he should feel guilty. "I can wander around on my own."

"It's okay," Peter said. "I like the company. I'm not picky about the setting."

That got another smile out of Sam. "It's an interesting setting, I have to say."

Peter indicated the water. "We call this the 'beach.' If you're feeling confident, I can tell you more about it."

Sam laughed. "I think I've read a little bit about the beach, actually. Feel free to tell me more if you'd like though."

"Pfft," Peter said. "The hands-on experience is way better than your books. Books don't give you the feeling of sand in your toes."

"They also don't give you sand in uncomfortable places," Sam pointed out. "Are you suggesting we need to get hands-on anyway?"

"Not so hands-on that sand gets in uncomfortable places," Peter replied, wryly. "But we could go for a walk if you wanted."

"Okay," Sam agreed. "It might be less noisy too."

Peter finished off his drink, then motioned toward the sand. "After you."

Sam took a few more sips of his drink and threw the rest away before heading down to the sand, checking behind himself just once to make sure Peter was following.

"I should've totally turned invisible to freak you out," Peter joked, guessing at why Sam had turned around. He increased his pace to fall into place beside Sam. "Don't worry. You're not rid of me yet."

"I don't want to be rid of you," Sam insisted. "I wouldn't have asked you to meet me here tonight if I did. And that invisible thing is still creepy, by the way."

"Thanks, that doesn't make me feel at all self-conscious," Peter replied. "The creepy part. Not the getting rid of me part, which you couldn't do even if you wanted to."

"I don't mean you're creepy, I mean the power's kind of creepy. I don't think you'd ever use it in a bad way," Sam said. "And I know I can't get rid of you. That and the self-healing thing have been hammered into my head enough times."

"Thank God, because I was starting to bore myself," Peter said. "And it's not that bad. You can't really tell the difference when you're in it."

"I wondered about that," Sam said. "Your sight doesn't go different or anything?"

"Nope," Peter said. "I didn't even know I was invisible the first time until Claude told me. I could show you if you want."

"Sure," Sam said. "We'll call this practicing."

"You're not going to be able to tell the difference," Peter told him. He reached over to put his hand on Sam's arm. He was used enough to turning invisible now that he'd be able to blink them both out of sight once he made contact.

Sam wasn't sure what he'd been expecting, but it wasn't for the only change to be the feeling of Peter's hand on his arm. "That's it?" he asked. "It's done?"

"Yep," Peter said. An idea occured to him. "Here, watch. When I let go you won't be able to see me. But you will when I touch you again."

Peter moved to take a step back so he could vanish from Sam's sight.

Sam couldn't help but stare a little as Peter vanished. "Okay, now I'm back to creepy," he teased.
