The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

Sam had the faces of most students down, so when he saw someone new, he gave her a smile. "Hey," he said. "Enjoying the party?"

"Long as those skunks keep their distance, I will," Joan said. "I'm Joan."

"I'm Sam," he said. "It's nice to meet you. I'm hoping the skunks will keep their distance from us as long as we stay away from them."

"Likewise," Joan said. "Are you new, too?"

"No, I'm on my third year here," Sam said. "Which is kind of amazing considering that before coming here, I was lucky to live in the same place for one year."

"Oh, wow, how come?" Joan asked.

"My dad moved us around a lot," Sam said, to keep from weirding her out with too much more than that. "But he sent me and my brother here, and then came to stay with us, and now he's married and we have a house and he's almost like a totally different person."

"That's cool," Joan said. "I don't know if I'd want either of my brothers here though."

She noticed that he didn't mention his mother, but she decided not to ask, not wanting to put her foot in her mouth.

"Are they older or younger?" Sam asked. That made all the difference, as far as he was concerned.

"One of each," Joan said, rolling her eyes.

"Ooh, stuck in the middle. I'm sort of learning how that goes," Sam said. "My sister's only one though, so it's probably not the same. I can understand why you wouldn't want your brothers here though. Especially the older one."

"I take it you have an older brother," Joan said, chuckling.

"Yeah, my brother Dean," Sam said. "Sometimes, I can't imagine not having him here with me, and sometimes I wonder if I could get away with strangling him."

"If you met a guy about my height with lighter hair and an almost unnatural need to flirt with you? That was probably him."

Joan flushed a little. "Yep, that sounds like him."

"I'm sorry if he came on a little strong, or weirded you out, or made you uncomfortable at all," Sam said. "Dean doesn't understand boundaries the way normal people do. This is where the strangling idea comes from most of the time."
