The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

Hoshi was walking past when a skunk cut her off and tried to climb her leg. "Ewww! Get it off of me!"

"EW!" Joan agreed, trying to figure out how to help dislodge the skunk. She looked around for a stick or something.

"Oh my god, it's a skunk! Ew ew ewww!" squealed Hoshi.

This place was seriously bizarre, Joan decided.

Luckily, she found a stick and poked at the skunk. "Get off!" she yelled.

The skunk didn't like getting poked. It got off of Hoshi's leg and scampered off, only stopping to turn around and stick its tongue out.

"This place just gets more bizarre every day," said Hoshi. "And I feel pretty foolish now about screaming over a skunk."

"I would have screamed too," Joan said. "If those things spray you, the smell lasts forever."

"I'm glad I didn't have to find that out. Thanks for helping me. My name is Hoshi. I don't think I've seen you around," she said.

Sam had the faces of most students down, so when he saw someone new, he gave her a smile. "Hey," he said. "Enjoying the party?"

"Long as those skunks keep their distance, I will," Joan said. "I'm Joan."

"I'm Sam," he said. "It's nice to meet you. I'm hoping the skunks will keep their distance from us as long as we stay away from them."

"Likewise," Joan said. "Are you new, too?"

"No, I'm on my third year here," Sam said. "Which is kind of amazing considering that before coming here, I was lucky to live in the same place for one year."

"Oh, wow, how come?" Joan asked.

"My dad moved us around a lot," Sam said, to keep from weirding her out with too much more than that. "But he sent me and my brother here, and then came to stay with us, and now he's married and we have a house and he's almost like a totally different person."

"That's cool," Joan said. "I don't know if I'd want either of my brothers here though."

She noticed that he didn't mention his mother, but she decided not to ask, not wanting to put her foot in her mouth.

"Yeeeah, the skunks scare me too," Hurley said. "You, uhhh, want some cheesecake? I probably shouldn't be eating this slice."

Hurley held up a finger and swung back to the food to grab an extra fork, which he returned with.

"Here. I'm, like, Hurley by the way."

"Nothing says hello like cake sharing," Hurley said with a chuckle.

"I think it's an excellent way to meet poeple," Joan said, using the fork he had given her to take a bite of the cheesecake.
