The boardwalk, Friday evening

Blair didn't have ice to work with this time, but she tried to do what she could with the location she had. Luckily the beach was pretty. Besides, too much gold in the decorations tended to cross the line into tacky.

So she kept the decorations to twinkling gold lights and candles. Most of the linens were a crisp white, with golden napkins and table runners to provide pops of color.

The bulk of the gold went into the food. There were brandied apricots, lemon and chocolate cheesecakes, mango sorbets, small cups of saffron vanilla pudding, miniature stuffed yellow peppers, and any number of foods that followed the theme, along with the pies that Ned had made.

Drinks were mixed, but naturally included Goldschläger, as well as coffee and cocoa decorated with tiny gold letters which said things like "Fandom" or "Goodbye Summer."

Blair had staked out a prime table with a view of the water. She sipped at a passionfruit martini, listened to the music coming out of the various speakers she'd had set up, and looked forward to a night of judging watching the crowd.

She was also going to make sure nobody served those skunks. Clearly they didn't know how to hold their liquor.

"You can't do both?" Not that she had a reason to be asking, or anything. "I mean, can you be born with these talents and learn magic, too?"

"Mostly you're born with magic," Dor explained. "There are spells and magical items you can use but most of these are either made by people who have a talent or they grow naturally. I take it that's not how it works for your world?"

"I'm not sure? I only know one wizard and he didn't really tell me much." Maybe the younger version would be more forthcoming. "What do you meant they grow naturally? Like on trees?"

"Or on bushes," Dor replied. "Like these shoes I'm wearing? They were from a shoe tree. The jeans and shirt are from a strange clothes tree that I got from Good magician Humfrey. Does the wizard you know go to school here?"

Whoa. "So going shopping is just a walk in the bushes?" Soooo cool. "Um, sort of? The one I know is in his thirties, but there's another him here who's a teenager. It's confusing."

"Well there are some things that have to be made," Dor replied. "Like armor and swords and such. We have some people who are specialized in the trade and the Centaurs also make some high quality item. It sounds very weird to know two different versions of the same person. I can see how that can be confusing."

"Centaurs? Like, centaurs centaurs? That's amazing."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Are there different kinds of centaurs?" Dor asked. "The ones where I'm from are half human and half horse."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
"As far as I know, we don't have any centaurs where I come from--they're just stories."

"Do you have any kind of magical creatures?" Dor asked curiously. "Like elves? Goblins? Dragons?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly blushed slightly, wondering if she needed to apologize to her parents for not completely believing the story of how they'd met. "Dragons. No goblins that I know of, and I'm not completely sure about elves."

"I've heard different things from different people," Dor replied thoughtfully. "Even the teacher of the magical animals class seems to have different creatures than most. Especially that gerbil."

"Hamster," Dor's shirt corrected. "A miniature giant space hamster."

"Whatever that is," Dor added.

"Yeah, he was pretty different, and I'm not sure the attachment's completely normal, y'know?" She agreed, then tried to explain, "and, um, a gerbil? It's a little rodent thing that's not quite a guinea pig and not a hamster, but I don't really know the difference when I'm looking that them."

"It looked just like an overgrown mouse to me," Dor said with a shrug. "I'm not exactly sure about Minsc as a teacher but he seems to know a good bit about animals. What do you think those eggs are?"

Re: Mingle!

"Birds? Or maybe dragons like in the Barry Plodder books? Oooh, or maybe dinosaurs?" She was letting her imagination run wild a bit now. "Maybe a snake or two, though I'm also hoping one of those isn't mine. What about you?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"My first thought was that it was a basilisk but there isn't a toad trying to hatch it," Dor said scratching his head. "I hope it isn't a harpy. They can be nasty."

He paused a moment feeling a bit foolish but decided that it wouldn't hurt to ask. "What's a dinosaur? Or a Barry Plodder?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Have you met harpies?" It took Molly a minute to process that Dor knew of harpies and basiliks, but didn't know about dinosaurs or this book series. "Well, a dinosaur is this now extinct, er, usually, I guess, gigantic walking reptile lizard thing, and some of them are, like, multiple stories tall and used to eat any other meat, and some are just as big, but only eat plants. Barry Plodder's this guy in a series of books, and he's a wizard, but he starts out with almost the worst life ever, then ends up going to this wizarding school with a bunch of other would-be wizards and witches, and comes out of it kind of bad-ass, even with the war."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Dor listened with a somewhat baffled look on his face.

Giant lizards? A kid wizard who goes to a school and...

Okay he could buy the story about the kid.

"I've run into my fair share of harpies," Dor said grimly. "I got stuck in a war between them and an army of goblins while I was trying to help another magician defend his castle. It wasn't pretty. Now I'm just glad there wasn't dinosaurs around as well."

"You should be. According to movies, they're pretty stompy. Wow, are you okay? That sounds like it would have been really tough." Not that she really knew what goblins did. "How bad are goblins to fight?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"It was," Dor replied. "It was about four years ago and... well it wasn't a pleasant experience. I learned a lot but probably the most important thing was that war is really horrible and I'd rather not kill anyone or anything if possible."

Dor might have forgotten the part that four years ago he was twelve and took control of a soldier's body.

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't most people feel that way?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know," Dor said. "Maybe? There's a lot of people back home who use swords, battle dragons and... y'know. Play the big hero kind of thing. After that whole scenario with the goblins and the harpies I realized it wasn't really me."

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] grasshopper-mol.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"What is you?" She asked, twisting her hair around her finger. "I mean...well, you know what I mean, but maybe with grammar. If you don't want to be a big hero, what do you want?"

Re: Mingle!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Dor frowned a little at that. "Well... um. Well I don't have much of a choice," Dor stammered a little. "That was pretty much decided on when I was born."
