Summer Dance/Gala Event | Evening | Saturday | June 19

As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

The darker areas of the room pulled Jonas in and he found himself a nice quiet spot where he took up some space.

"It thought I'd find you here," Beka smiled as she found him and slid in the chair beside him.

"Hello, Beka," he said, smiling over at her. "You look very nice tonight. Even when it's dark, I can tell that. How are you?"

"Good. I like dances," she decided, smiling at him and reaching over smooth down his tie. Not that it needed it. "You look nice too, even when it's dark," she teased.

"I managed to tie that by myself," he said, reaching to snag her hand in his once she'd smoothed his tie. "It only took me half an hour. I'm starting to like dances as well. Especially when it means I can see you like this."

He was apparently full of flattery and honest compliments.

She blushed and leaned forward to kiss the corner of his mouth, her fingers tightening round his. "Sweet talker," she murmured.

"It's quite amazing what books will teach you," he mumbled jokingly. "That and I've been reading a lot of greeting cards lately."

She drew back with a puzzled look. "Greeting cards?" she asked. "What are those?"

"It seems to be a way for people to convey feelings in text and picture form," he explained. "I've seen them in local stores. They have greeting cards for all the major holidays, for sympathy, congratulations, Newchildren, and graduation. They're small and paper and pretty convenient."

"And they give people compliments too?" she asked, finding it a peculiar thing. "I think I'd rather tell someone how I feel about them than put it down on paper."

"They do," he said, nodding. "Not all of them, some of them are used in rather sad situations but a lot of them are happy. It seems like they make good gifts or good ways to send someone your thoughts if they live far away from you."

"I can see that," she considered it. "Mayhap there'd be some that Aniki and Kora would find amusing."

"A lot of them were funny," he agreed with a nod. "If the mail system on the island is as strange as the rest of it is, I'm sure you could send a card and have it arrive there. Sort of a way to say hello and joke with them a bit."

"I've received letters from them afore and wrote some myself," she nodded and played with his fingers. "I'll have to look for them."

"I also think this calls for me buying one for you," he said thoughtfully. "I bet I could find a silly one that makes you laugh and says nothing at all of value. Just silliness."

"You could," she agreed. "You're looby enough to," she wrinkled her nose at him. "Will you be sitting here for the entire dance?"

"I don't think so," he said, shaking his head. "Why, did you have plans?"

"Are you still brave enough to try that?" he asked, laughing. "I could have gotten even worse since the last time."

"You're not the most frightful opponent I've faced," she teased him, bumping his shoulder with hers.

"I'm not?" Jonas was so surprised by that. Except he wasn't. "If I made a scary face, would I be the most frightful?"

"No, I'd kiss you and it'd go away," she smiled and leaned her head against his shoulder, deciding sitting wasn't bad either.

"You sound supremely confident of that," he said. She probably had a reason to be confident because she was right. "You don't think I could resist your kiss?"

"No," she said simply, not even taking a moment to think about it. "You enjoy it too much."
