Summer Dance/Gala Event | Evening | Saturday | June 19

As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

"I know you were," he assured her, laughing too. "You were just...presenting a very different version of yourself. It was hard to figure out what I should really think."

"Well, for future reference," she said, smiling a bit, "think it's Fandom weirdness. And don't start arguing with me."

"Why am I not allowed to argue?" he wondered. "You'd argue."

"Because it's pointless," she said, smile growing a little fainter now. "If it's the island messing around, then you're not gonna convince me that what I think is real isn't real. And it's... only gonna make me feel confused."

And unsteady, and unsure.

"Right." He winced briefly and dropped his eyes, feeling a little bad about things now. "Well, I'm sorry. I didn't know. I'll remember for the next time something out of the ordinary happens."

"It's okay," she said, leaning closer to rest her cheek against his for a moment, while lowering her voice. "I know it's the gut reaction. I mean, I've done it too. But it's useless."

After a breath, and a little more lightly, she added, "And it's just really fucking rude to tell people they're not themselves, you know."

"I don't think you needed to say that," he said quietly, wincing again and trying not to take a step back now. "You're making me feel worse, Kate. I didn't know and I was reacting without thinking. I didn't know."

Well, he didn't have to take a step back, because now she did, a little embarrassed to have... messed up a little, there.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that." And yet she'd said it. Even if she, of all people, should know how badly what's said and what's meant sometimes seem to match up. "I'm not trying to make you feel bad."

Bod let his hands fall to his sides when she stepped away, flexing his fingers a bit and then stilling them. A brief, uncomfortable silence followed while he gathered his thoughts. "It's all right. I know it wasn't intentional. I understand what you're saying. What you've said.

"And I know you were just worried," she replied, rubbing at one of her wrists, looking down at it. "And you didn't know. I know that."

She shrugged, hazarding a glance at him. "Anyway, I think you're probably not a proper Fandom denizen before you've had to deal with a friend who's acting weird. So... Congratulations."

"And I promise I'll remember if this sort of things happens again," he told her, nodding. "I wouldn't use the 'I didn't know' excuse if that truly wasn't the truth. I just wanted you...to come back."

One of the corners of her mouth curved upwards a bit, but her expression was wry. "I know what that's like," she said, offering him her hand. "Believe me. Sixteen years, on and off, of experience with wanting someone to just come back."

"Your experience isn't resolved as easily as the day changing," he said, taking her hand and giving it a little tug to bring her back closer to him again. "It's not been as easy for you."

"Yeah but it's more predictable," she said, easily stepping closer again. "I know who's who and how they're gonna act."

"I'm sorry if I made you feel confused," he said again, shaking his head. "I had no intention of doing that. I won't do it again."

"Not much," she assured him softly. "I was too... dementedly cheerful for that. But I'd appreciate it."

"Sometimes my skills of observation need some work," he admitted, half smiling. "That was one of those times. I didn't think, I reacted and that's only gotten me into trouble in the past."

"Well, it's good practice, right?" she offered, subdued but smiling a little bit. "For when shit really starts to get serious."

"I suppose," he said and reached to scratch his cheek. "Have we ruined this date?"

"No, Fandom has," Kate decided without missing a beat. "And it's not ruined."

Bod almost pointed out the contradictory nature of that statement but refrained.

"It's not?" he asked, hopeful.

"No," she said. "I mean, would we seriously let something minor like that ruin it? I don't think so."

"No, you're right," he said, nodding and laughing at himself. "I'm sorry I'm being ridiculous. No, we shouldn't let something minor and something that's over ruin tonight."

"Exactly," Kate nodded, smiling more now. "There's a whole party going on, and no classical music or chirpy fifties chicks in sight. We should enjoy ourselves."

"I could kiss you to get things back on track," he offered, looking shy about it.
