Summer Dance/Gala Event | Evening | Saturday | June 19

As the sun started to set, the lights officially came on at the new community center! The building was now complete, its walls gleaming and solid in the waning light. As people began to arrive, they would notice decorations lining the tiled and bright corridors, leading them towards the large auditorium where the dance was being held.

Once inside the auditorium, there were more decorations. Streamers in the colors of summer hung from the rafters and painted the walls. There were fresh flowers in every corner and on every table, bringing fragrance and festiveness to the room. The lights were low in the auditorium, dimmed to provide both mood and setting to this party in the evening.

There were several long tables stocked full with foods of all kinds and there was even a bar with an expert bartender who'd be happy to serve you. Tips were welcome but not mandatory. Large speakers hung in the corners of the room, installed to provide the latest and greatest sound system to the new building.

Everything was completed, everything was ready so it was time to enjoy yourselves!

"Thanks," she smiled. "I kinda wanted to be really... anti-yesterday."

Meaning, to show as much leg and shoulders and skin as possible without looking slutty.

"I think you've succeeded," he said, returning that smile easily. "I'm sorry I didn't recognize that as something island related. I was more than a little surprised and couldn't think past that."

"It's okay," she said, with a wry smile, reaching to put her hands on his shoulders and pull him a bit closer. "At least you figured out that wasn't how I usually am."

"I was pretty positive the last half year hadn't been a lie," he said, moving closer to her easily and slipping an arm around her waist. "Did you want to be my date for tonight? It's a little late, I know, but better than never, right?"

"Oh. Actually, I already promised... some random dude I'd be his date. Sorry," she joked, not really bothering to make it convincing. She laughed. "Of course I want to be your date. Come on."

"I didn't want to make an assumption," he explained, laughing quietly. "After yesterday, I wasn't even sure I'd see you. I'm glad you're here though. I would have missed you and your very, very gorgeous dress."

Safe to say he preferred when she showed off skin and not when she covered it all up as she had yesterday. Easy choice there.

"I think you just like that there's not a whole lot of it," she teased, observantly. "And I didn't feel like hiding. I wasn't the only one making an ass out of themseleves yesterday."

"That might be true, yes," he said, unapologetic of that fact. "And no, you weren't. According to the radio, a large portion of the island was under the influence of whatever that was. I spent some time last night imagining what I would have been life if I'd been affected."

"I bet you would've made me blush on purpose," she replied, then rolled her eyes at her own behavior. "Not that it would've been hard."

"Being improperly close was apparently quite the faux pas," he said, smiling down at her. "Island strangeness or not, I don't think I'm going to forget the sight of you blushing."

"Good," Kate snorted. "Because that's all of it you're ever going to see."

Unless he made her incredibly angry, or embarrassed her. And she'd rather he didn't.

"That's sad," he teased, reaching up to stroke one of those cheeks. "I quite liked it. I can almost see why you like it so much on me."

"You deal with it way better than I did," she said, wrinkling her nose.

"Last night, when I was done cleaning up after the party, I had to swing by my room for something, and I happened to find the condom stash in my nightstand? I had to lay down for about fifteen minutes, I was so upset."

Laughing, Bod reached up and tapped that wrinkled nose with one finger. "You were really in a strong state of denial at the party. I guess it was hard to deny when you came face to face with the evidence of being improperly close to someone?"

"Mm. I was ridiculous." And demonstrating her existing skills for repression and denial, but that didn't need to get mentioned. "But I honestly just... Refused to remember. Because that just didn't go with my morals or whatever."

"You did remember me, though," he said, winding his other arm around her and pulling her a little closer. "You remembered me with endearments and a lot o happiness."

"Of course I remembered you," she said, getting her arms around his neck. No objections or thoughts of finding it improper. "I was still me, somewhere under it all." Beat. "Sweetie."

Yeah, that sounded really weird now, and she chuckled quietly.

"I know you were," he assured her, laughing too. "You were just...presenting a very different version of yourself. It was hard to figure out what I should really think."

"Because it's pointless," she said, smile growing a little fainter now. "If it's the island messing around, then you're not gonna convince me that what I think is real isn't real. And it's... only gonna make me feel confused."

And unsteady, and unsure.

"Right." He winced briefly and dropped his eyes, feeling a little bad about things now. "Well, I'm sorry. I didn't know. I'll remember for the next time something out of the ordinary happens."

"It's okay," she said, leaning closer to rest her cheek against his for a moment, while lowering her voice. "I know it's the gut reaction. I mean, I've done it too. But it's useless."

After a breath, and a little more lightly, she added, "And it's just really fucking rude to tell people they're not themselves, you know."

"I don't think you needed to say that," he said quietly, wincing again and trying not to take a step back now. "You're making me feel worse, Kate. I didn't know and I was reacting without thinking. I didn't know."
