Friday Evening: Town Hall: Homecoming (8pm - 10pm)

The first thing that might be noticed when students walked into the Town Hall was the towering stone troll statues that had been dragged in to grace the corners of the dance floor.  It being Homecoming and a semi-formal dance, the trolls were decked out appropriately in hats, glitter, and togas.  Fairy lights were strung across the ceiling, some twined with streamers and some dripping glitter and confetti across the dance floor.

The walls were decorated with blown up pictures of significant events at Fandom: Graduations, the school blowing up, the Christmas pageants, plays, carnivals, zombies, all the moments that make Fandom Fandom.  Given a place of honour on the walls were a mock up of an exploding volcano, a massive gremlin in a bow tie, and, of course, the Stickbug flag.

Large lit up snowmen congregated around the punch bowl against a snowy backdrop and across the ballroom near the stage, there was a mural of large dinosaurs reaching up to enjoy a glittery streamer dinner.  The wall of the door though had the biggest picture of all - a painting of the island at night from across the water.

As students dropped off their wraps, they were pointed to vote for Homecoming Court then encouraged to proceed into the ballroom.

Adah had considered not coming to this; years of listening to Rachel bemoan about how she was missing her homecoming and the potential of a disappointed River (and, possibly, somewhere in her hopes, a disappointed Eel) had Adah handwavily finding herself a nice dress, slipping it on, and then slipping over to the town hall, where her and her date (her notebook) would find a nice corner to sit, and write, and hopefully not suffer an overload for the constant influx of data that she had been collecting all day.

Annette was wandering around; imagine that? And she spotted Adah, alone. Smiling slightly, she approached the girl and said, "You look very pretty tonight."

Very slowly, Adah looked up from her notebook. There was a good moment of staring, and then there were a few slow blinks. The last thing she expected was for anyone except perhaps River to bother to notice her, much less address her, and she could think of very little else to do but stare and blink in surprise, especially since a compliment was tossed in there by way of greeting. It wasn't like she knew what to say; it wasn't like she would say anything.

Annette wasn't expecting her to say anything, it was just her way of letting the other girl know that she was noticed. And her beauty, in its quiet simplicity, was admired. "I'm sorry if I bothered you," she replied quietly, glancing down at the notebook. "I just thought to pause a moment when I saw you. I hope you enjoy your evening, Adah." Annette turned to go.

The glance down at the notebook only caused Adah to draw it closer, tighter, as if for protection. Certainly with no intention to use it over this strange occurrence of random discussion. Her eyes stayed trained on Annette as she moved away, a bit hard and cold but mostly just confused.

The room might be crowded, but River could still hear Adah through the noise. She wasn't surprised to find her in a shadowy corner, and perhaps that was a good place. River moved between groups of people, taking a detour by the punch to pick up a glass for Adah and refill her own, finally reaching Adah and her notebook. Chosing to hide in a corner didn't make her less beautiful in mind or appearance.

Noticing River's smooth and graceful approach, Adah's head tilted, blinking a little so that the shift of attention combined with the lights didn't cause too much of a mental jolt. And while she could total up the sum of people in this room right now in a matter of moments, it didn't take a mathematical genius to know that River was carrying on more cup of punch than technically necessary. Her head tilted with two very important questions. First, if one was for her. And two, if it had been spiked yet.

River handed Adah one cup, answering her first question. "Not spiked yet. I don't take alcohol well, and tonight is for dancing, not falling asleep in a corner." That should answer the second. She smiled, a little nervously, thinking the yellow dress suited Adah well, but being uncertain how to express it. She didn't want Adah to think that she had any objections to her usual clothes, or that her dress in any way was more important than all the other things that made Adah special to River. "You came," she said finally.

Adah didn't have the faintest idea of how she'd take to alcohol, so it was probably a good thing that River had hit up the punch bowl pre-ritual imbibing. Notebook tucked under her arm to free her hand, she couldn't reach out much to take the cup, but she managed, curling over it to have a small sip. Her nose wrinkled a little it was a bit tart, but not too bad. She took another sip as she answered River's comment with an idle thought on how she probably figured she should.

Idle, of course, to her mind, because that's what she was focusing on projecting; any threads that leaked out about not wanting to disappoint River and curiosity about disappointing the Eel were completely unconscious.

River stared down into her glass, wondering what would have been worse to Adah; disappointing her or Lee. Still, it was unfair to ask, or even show that she was wondering. "Observations made? Any that are possible to share?" It was an unfair question too, as Adah's mind was quite clear to her, but River was uncertain what to say.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Were there any that were possible to not be shared, Adah wondered, smirking slightly, mostly teasing, into her cup, but, she figured, she could highlight a few for River. Like the fact that she felt 'modern' music was very loud, but a lot of it had some exceptional beats. The lyrics were disappointing, though, not enough amazing rhymes. The lights in this place hurt her head, but sometimes in a good way. People seemed mostly happy, which was a little disappointing as well, because she was hoping to bear witness to some heartwrenching drama. She was also observing, every time she had the chance, that her sister Rachel would be appalled by this homecoming dance, and that was probably why Adah liked it so much.

River let out a chuckle, particularly at the last part. Then a thought passed through her mind that if Adah wanted drama River could throw more apples at Lee, but she guessed that would not be met by approval. She shook her head, wanting Lee out of it, as thoughts of him seemed to be creating a barrier between her and Adah, ruining what was important. She took a sip of her drink.

"I will dance tonight," she said quietly, looking over the rim of the glass at Adah. "But first with you, if you still want to."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah kept her eyes cast down toward her drink, although she knew River was looking over at her and she knew that River didn't need to see her eyes to see inside her head. Still, she felt she had to keep them lowered as such as if that could mute the fact that she was thinking that if River was going to dance, then at least Adah knew she'd have something to keep her eye on all night, other than the discombobulating lights and emptying of the punch bowl.

And of course she would dance. The real question was as to whether or not she ever stopped, dancing that dance River spoke of, thought of, seemed to like so much. Not like Adah could just turn it off, lightswitch to the brain, on off, off on.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It made River's heart jump and her cheeks warm, knowing that Adah would watch her dance, the kind of dance with moving feet. The other kind, the one she had wanted for her and Adah - although to be honest there was more than one kind, some of them not fit for public spaces - did indeed go on continously. "A matter of focus, of choice. Choose a theme." River traced the tip of her finger around the rim of her glass, then let it continue around the rims of a line of imaginary glasses in the air around them. "What would a dance with me be about?"

Would, could, should. Three completely different things, all based on how it begins. Would, used in place of will, to make a statement or form a question less direct or blunt, dluow. Could, to be able to; have the ability, power, or skill to, dluoc. Should, used to indicate duty, propriety, or expediency, dluohs.

Would be complex, challenging, and threatening to lose its balance. Could be exhausting but enlighteningly so. Should be often.

Unsure whether this was the theme itself or a way of reaching the theme, River watched Adah, letting her finger catch a strand of her own hair - brushed for once, thanks to Parker - and turn it into a spiralling curl. "Triplets. Joined together, separated, merged?" she asked.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah noticed herself watching River wrap her hair around her finger, blinked, and then shook her head lightly, blaming the Eel for the sudden need to watch hands and scope out alternate meanings. She jerked her mind back to the words; words were better, safer things to dance around. Triplets was a good way of thinking about it; structures, like DNA, chromosomes, many similar ones but just enough to make them slightly different, in purpose, in appearance, in sound. DNA, the double helix, graceful curves of code twisting like River's hair around her finger, built up of them, thousands, millions of them, that the eyes couldn't see...Her mind was drifting a lot tongiht, it seemed; she wondered if River minded, and she noticed she was watching her fingers yet again.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
River didn't mind the watching of hands, as long as they weren't Lee's. She reached out, turning the strand of hair into a stretched coil, eventually tensing into a straight line. "Slow, drifting dance. Is there a pattern?" River dropped the strand of hair to pick up another one, starting over again.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Associations and inconsistent jumps, but Adah wasn't thinking about River's question now; she was now searching for patterns, a pace, in how she was straightening her hair, watching intently, quietly, counting seconds and noticing things like sheen and length and how it was difficult to determine the precise color of it, or precisely might share its color, with the lighting in this place.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Just listening, River picked up another strand, turning it into a second coil, and then making a third one, moving her hand to let the light catch the hair from different angles.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
At which point, Adah had precisely calculated an equation to determine the average amount of time it took River to do one strand of hair, her hea da flurry of numbers, factors, multiplication and addition, and her shoulder lifted slightly as she grinned, blushing at the efficiency of her arithmetic. River should stop that; it wasn't fair to get her preoccupied in mathematics. She couldn't help it, and she didn't feel like it made for very good dancing material.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
River raised her eyebrow, all her fingers now trapped in coiling hair. "Mathematics is like dancing is like fighting is like flying is like music." She looked at Adah, wondering. "Why should I stop?" It struck her that perhaps she was getting things wrong. Perhaps Adah didn't enjoy this, and it was just the part of her mind that kept flowing that did. Was she pushing Adah into a place she'd rather not be?

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The soft smile on Adah's lowered face would answer River's unknown questions much better than any of her thoughts would. But, to the spoken one, River would receive answers of embarrassment, for Adah's fixation, for her retreat into the safe, firm ground of numbers, which couldn't be argued or denied or questioned as readily as other things like how the sheen in the light caught Adah's eyes, made her brain twitch, but in a good way, and how Adah almost wanted to see how her own equation of straightening out the loose curls would match up to River's, or how River doing the same to her hair would compare, comparisons of length, time....other things that she tried not to think of because they made her feel embarrassed and timid about how River would react to those sorts of thoughts about her, thoughts of hair and fingers that, if Adah didn't watch herself, would build up toward REM embers of grass and poetry and lips.

As she felt Adah wouldn't mind - or at least part of her wouldn't, but Adah ofted wanted contradictory things, it seemed - River pulled one hand away, releasing her own hair. She stepped closer and reached out for a strand od Adah's hair, intent on repeating the experiment on her. If Adah chose to interpret it through mathematics she was free to do so, as her take on this particular dance.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Mathematics was easy; mathematics gave Adah a chance to focus on something rational and solid when the other option was irrational and unbalanced, confusing and hard to describe. Mathetmatics gave her several facets to focus on that that made more sense, and she even had one more equation to add in: the average length of how long she held her breath as River trailed her fingers along her hair, in some sort of anxious anticipation. No, it apic tas uoix na.
