Friday Evening: Town Hall: Homecoming (8pm - 10pm)

The first thing that might be noticed when students walked into the Town Hall was the towering stone troll statues that had been dragged in to grace the corners of the dance floor.  It being Homecoming and a semi-formal dance, the trolls were decked out appropriately in hats, glitter, and togas.  Fairy lights were strung across the ceiling, some twined with streamers and some dripping glitter and confetti across the dance floor.

The walls were decorated with blown up pictures of significant events at Fandom: Graduations, the school blowing up, the Christmas pageants, plays, carnivals, zombies, all the moments that make Fandom Fandom.  Given a place of honour on the walls were a mock up of an exploding volcano, a massive gremlin in a bow tie, and, of course, the Stickbug flag.

Large lit up snowmen congregated around the punch bowl against a snowy backdrop and across the ballroom near the stage, there was a mural of large dinosaurs reaching up to enjoy a glittery streamer dinner.  The wall of the door though had the biggest picture of all - a painting of the island at night from across the water.

As students dropped off their wraps, they were pointed to vote for Homecoming Court then encouraged to proceed into the ballroom.

Karal was mingling...for a given value of mingling. He was sort of standing off to the side, looking a little wide-eyed as he watched everyone and everything.

Beauty smiled when she spotted Karal, and raised her hand in a wave as she approached. "It's quite an amazing thing, isn't it?"

"Beauty, hello." He smiled as she came closer. "Glory, yes! I've never seen anything like it."

"Hello, Karal." Beauty looked around at the crowd. "Neither have I. It's wonderful and strange at the same time. I can't believe I'm actually at a party and not wishing someone would just give me leave to go home."

"Then I am very glad that you came! This place is strange, and I confess I wished to return home as well, but now I quite like it here."

"I love being here, at the school," Beauty admitted. "I would anyway, I think, just by virtue of it being a school. But I really am enjoying myself, so much more than I expected to beyond the lessons themselves." She waved her hand toward the party-goers. "Everyone here is amazingly kind and friendly."

"They are, for the most part, yes." Karal grinned. "And it is refreshing to know that someone else enjoys the school for the lessons themselves! Have you seen the library yet?"

"When I was a child, the only thing I wanted was attend university someday. Girls don't do that where I'm from, so..." Beauty smiled, and shrugged her shoulder. "This is a chance I never thought I'd get. And yes, I have seen the library! It's amazing! I could go in there and never come back out."

"Well, it is different here, so perhaps you will get the chance," he said, smiling sympathetically. "As for the library, I was lucky enough to be given a chance to work there. All day on Fridays I am able to stay there for the entire day! There are so many books, so much knowledge, that was not even dreamed of in my world."

Beauty gave Karal a wide-eyed look. "You work there? You are lucky! Although I did just get myself a job on Friday afternoons at a bookshop, to go along with my work at the post office. Not quite as impressive a collection as the library, but it does mean I get access to quite a lot of books, and get paid to be there. We had a library at home, in our house in the city, but not like this. Nothing even remotely like what's here."

"A bookshop is good in a different way, as you get to see what is brand new, and getting paid is very good. If you liked, you would be welcome to come in on Fridays and share the books," he offered, then blushed. "Not that you would not be welcome any time, as it's a library, but you could come by if you liked."

Smiling happily at the invitation, Beauty gave an enthusiastic nod. "I only have one morning class on Fridays, so I'd have plenty of time to come to the library before and after. I have such a list of things I want to read about!"

"I have a class second period, and the library is closed for lunch, but any other time I will be there."

Beauty laughed. "You're in my Love Smart class, I'd forgotten. Lunchtime is probably when I should be getting over to the bookshop anyway, so I think that works nicely. I'll make sure now to come by on Fridays, since you were kind enough to invite me, Karal."

He flushed at mention of the class. "I believe I try and block out that class as much as possible," he said. "Else I would have remembered. And you are most welcome. The love of books is one that is always a pleasure to share."

"Today's wasn't too bad, but that's mostly because I spent the time making up stories with Annette and Andrew," Beauty replied, with a wry smile. "The rest of the time, I do the same, just try not to be noticed and remind myself that some people have a different outlook on things. But you're right about the books. It's been nice meeting so many people here with that love."
