Friday Evening: Town Hall: Homecoming (8pm - 10pm)

The first thing that might be noticed when students walked into the Town Hall was the towering stone troll statues that had been dragged in to grace the corners of the dance floor.  It being Homecoming and a semi-formal dance, the trolls were decked out appropriately in hats, glitter, and togas.  Fairy lights were strung across the ceiling, some twined with streamers and some dripping glitter and confetti across the dance floor.

The walls were decorated with blown up pictures of significant events at Fandom: Graduations, the school blowing up, the Christmas pageants, plays, carnivals, zombies, all the moments that make Fandom Fandom.  Given a place of honour on the walls were a mock up of an exploding volcano, a massive gremlin in a bow tie, and, of course, the Stickbug flag.

Large lit up snowmen congregated around the punch bowl against a snowy backdrop and across the ballroom near the stage, there was a mural of large dinosaurs reaching up to enjoy a glittery streamer dinner.  The wall of the door though had the biggest picture of all - a painting of the island at night from across the water.

As students dropped off their wraps, they were pointed to vote for Homecoming Court then encouraged to proceed into the ballroom.

"It's been a very long day," he said, smile fading at those particular memories, fresh as they were. "Glad you came though. It's nice to see you. Wasn't sure I was going to see a familiar face tonight."

So. Then he just might have been disappointed if she hadn't come. Good. Although, just because he was glad she was here was not the same as being disappointed she wasn't, technically speaking, and she would not allow herself to think otherwise. "Faces painted for a night of make-believe and ridiculous dresses, although you do look nice in a suit.."

She wondered if she should make mention of her observations and the series of glares he'd received. She peeked at him through her hair some more, studying his face as if to determine. She was also trying to figure out what had her more reluctant: bringing up something potentially unpleasant, or bring up something that showed just how much attention she'd be paying to him. And, since she rarely thought twice about bring up something unpleasant, it ended up to be a pretty easy answer.

"Thank you," he said, grin returning. "Don't tell anyone but it's the only I have. The tie thing irritates my neck. You look amazing."

Yeah, he'd already said that but it merited mentioning again.

And Adah was certainly not one that a repeated thought, especially one like that, would go unnoticed toward. She turned her head, tilted slightly, toward him, quirking both an eyebrow and a grin. She had to admit; she didn't mind hearing it twice, even if it did seem to help support her theory about the stability of the Eel's mental state.

But it was kind of irritating how she couldn't think of a comeback in response to that, and only seemed to be able to think of how much she appreciated hearing it. She told herself that it was because Rachel would die, absolutely die in writhing, shocked pain, as the whole scene, but she knew better.

"I like the color," he said, almost stumbling over words, fashion maven that he wasn't. He turned towards her, leaning a hip against the wall. "That smile's nice too."

"I should hope you'd like at least that," Adah wrote with no small amount of insistence, "considering that it is mostly your fault."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll take the blame for it," he said proudly. "And hope I continue making it appear."

"I'd be careful," Adah wrote, making sure to put the warning tone in her eyes. "I could start glaring." She quirked an eyebrow, watching his reaction to her subtle segue carefully.

His eyes shifted briefly, quickly at her words and he almost drew in on himself, managed to cover it with a jerky shift and stretch against the wall.

"No reason to glare at me," he said. "Besides, I bet your glare's nice too."

How interesting that that just about nearly earned him one, if it weren't for her still persistent smirk. Still, she had decided earlier that there was something she had to bother him about, and this seemed like as good a time as any. perhaps she'd push all the right buttons to get him to stop saying things like how she looked nice and she could stop worrying about the sorts of reactions that sent through her.

"I noticed that River was among the Glarers. When I asked, however , she would not tell me anything; I thought perhaps you could shed some light on the matter? My curiosity needs to be satiated."

"You noticed that?" This time, he did draw back a little, all those glares and stares coming back and he had to take a breath.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I notice many things," Adah wrote back importantly with a lift of her chin, almost defiant against the fact that he wasn't aware of that.

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
"I know," he said, ducking his head and yanking on his tie for lack of anything better to do. "I don't know why she was glaring at me. It didn't start today. Last time I saw her before she started this...whatever it is was the party on the roof and I danced with her. I don't know, I thought she was my friend and now she apparently hates me and she won't tell me why. I've asked. Today she threw something at me. So, I don't know. I'm sorry."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
With slightly widened eyes, Adah tilted her head away a bit. Yeah; she'd noticed the apple throwing, too. Drawing in a deep breath and letting it out with a sigh, she returned to the notebook. "She made it seem like you'd done something to hurt her. In all honesty, I can't imagine it. But River is very difficult to read sometimes."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
"I haven't done anything," he blurted out, wincing immediately and waving a hand in apology. "I haven't done anything. I haven't hurt her. I don't even know what's going on. I've asked her several times what's wrong and she won't tell me. I don't know. And it's hard not to know."

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
And Adah, with a deep frown and drawing her eyes away toward the floor in worried consideration, would have had to agree with him. River was hard to read; too hard, sometimes, which wasn't awfully fair of her, considering she could read everyone like an open book...

"I didn't have a good day," Lee said and thumped his head against the wall. "I wasn't even going to come tonight."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Adah smiled a little, picking up her notebook again, and, after she'd passed the next bit of conversation over to Lee, she looked distinctly away.

"Neither was I; but I'm glad we both seemed to have changed our minds."

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
His grin returned at her words, soft and hidden from most everyone in the room but her.

"Me too," he said quietly. "Let me see your eyes? And you can see mine."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Smiling a little in spite of herself, Adah let out a small breath before lifting her head, turning back toward him a little. She had to tuck the notebook under her arm to free up her hand to brush the hair out of her eyes, and she blinked a few times before settling a light gaze toward the Eel's, as if to clear them. She pretended and told herself that she didn't know what he could possibly want to see them for, but there she was, looking anyway.

"I like your eyes," he said. "I know I've told you that before but I do."

He looked at her thoughtfully and then, coming to some decision, raised a hand and moved closer to her face but stopping before he touched.

"Your smile goes to your eyes," he said and twirled his fingers in the air towards each of her eyes. "A real smile. A full smile."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Adah's eyes closed a moment as she tried to hold in a laugh. On the list of the sort of gestures expected during a moment like this, that was certainly not making an appearance, but that was probably why Adah appreciated it like she did. And her grin was definitely reaching her eyes this time, shining a bit before making a point to follow his fingers very carefully, making a point to notice them for a moment before glancing at the Eel. No, he couldn't read her mind like River could, but she certainly did wonder if he could tell what she was thinking.

"You notice things," he said quietly. "So do I."

He moved his fingers around a little more, up and down and back and forth, always slow before dropping his hand back to his side.

"You can try, if you want," he said and smiled. "What I just did. You can try that on me if you want."

Re: Shadowy Corners

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-10-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Adah's grin was sharp. Oh, yes. A Mad Aloof Eel did notice things, but what interesting things he noticed. Or rather, the interesting part was not in what he noticed, but how he chose to notice them. Interesting how he thought that; interesting how that was almost nothing like what she was thinking.

But it did give her an idea. It had been a long day, a long day of observing, watching, with just her eyes. Drawing in a little bit of a breath, she let her notebook drop from the crook of her arm, onto the floor, because she wouldn't have been able to hold it there anyway if she was reaching up, her eyes also drifting that way, to lightly bring her hand to the Eel's hair line, not quite intending to even lightly touch it, just preemptively see if she could send the phantom of touch in its actual place.

It had been a long day and he was more relaxed now, in a dark corner in a noisy hall than he had been all day. So, when he nearly felt her touch, could almost imagine it, his eyes almost slipped closed all the way and he let out a quiet breath but was otherwise still.
