Normally, Sam was very focused on her work, but today, with what had to be a new high in complaint calls, she was finding it difficult to focus on so many people who were angry at her without getting flustered about it. After a few hours, she decided that what she needed was a distraction -- just something that she could shift her focus on every so often to remind her that complaint calls weren't all that existed in the world.

She was thinking, of course, of online chess.

It was just one tab open on the computer that was otherwise full of Portalocity tabs, and she only had the time to really make moves every ten or twenty minutes, but simply knowing that it was there and strategizing in her head was doing wonders for her ability to persevere today.

The NOW HIRING sign was still in the window, and Portalocity was open!

Mary made the mistake of asking Gunther to work at the front desk yesterday. She wasn't sure why, but now there were knife marks all over the front desk. He'd even chopped off the cord from the desk phone. "I guess it's time for a new cordless phone. Oh, and maybe a new desk," she grumbled as she went through last-minute reservations.
