suitably_heroicDespite their differences, Atton and Anakin actually had a lot in common: a dark side past, a propensity towards complaining, the deaths of women they were in love with... yeah, they had ample reason to square off for a nice one-on-one with emotional sharing and coping and blah blah blah whatever they were going to be whaling on each other with practice lightsabers like the grown adults they really weren't.
Atton had left his jacket at home, partly because he didn't want it getting wet (because that was still a looming threat) and partly because he needed to maneuver more than he needed the jacket's defensive padding. Otherwise, though, he hadn't prepared much.
Look, he knew his own abilities with the lightsaber were no match with a guy who'd been trained with it for years instead of weeks. Didn't mean he was going to admit he was totally outmatched.
