Dani walked into the barn with a handful of carrots and started handing them out. "Looks like the weather will be pretty decent for a picnic, even if it's still December," said Dani. "Who wants to go for a ride and check out all the newb... Whoa."

She came to a halt in front of an empty stall, even though she was sure the barn was full the last time she left. Dani did a head count. Then she counted one more time, to make sure all the horses were accounted for, even the new one. She walked out of the barn, then walked back in. Yes, there was still an empty stall. She took one more shot and walked out. This time, she went all the way to The Perk and came back with coffee. The empty stall was still there, and the horses were in their correct stalls. "I swear, this place is just messing with me," she grumbled.

The Gig was open.

People celebrated the end of one year and start of a new year in different ways. They might drink champagne one night and swear off alcohol the next morning. Mary preferred to watch casino implosions on YouTube. She was from Las Vegas, where a new start usually meant blowing up a casino and starting fresh with a new one. Not that Mary planned on blowing anything up herself. She pointedly skipped over the implosion of the old Montecito hotel, since she actually preferred the old version over the new one.

Have you ever had one of those days? The sort of day where nothing quite goes right, where what you think you're doing is spring cleaning, you've got an armload of everything from old clothes to journals to a sword and you're minding your own business when suddenly you realize that the room that you were going to move your belongings to was suddenly much more open than you had expected?

And drafty?

And in the wrong corner of both time and space, while you were clad in traditional Japanese casual garb that was even considered mostly outdated in the year 1885?

Because Captain Nathan Algren was apparently having one of those days, having stepped out from the hallway into America with an armload of mementos and old laundry he had no intention of ever wearing again. And when he turned around with wide eyes to see where in the world his world had gone, all he saw was the rest of the Causeway leading to the mainland, and the last vanishing remains of what had apparently been a surprise portal.

"Fandom," he muttered, shaking his head and turning to look back toward the island again. "I had hoped you might have gotten this out of your system."

At least it was a small island. He could make his way into town, figure out which way was up, and then maybe see about arranging a way to get back home through Portalocity.

"You couldn't have at least waited until I was carrying an armload with shoes?"

All while barefoot. Wasn't it great to be back?

[OOC: HE'S BACK. I've missed him, shh don't judge me. Open post is open, but of course he's going to wind up at the picnic, too.]

Allie was spending her evening poking around the internet and reading year end lists on her phone. She didn't know most of the celebrity names they were talking about but it still seemed like one hell of a long and depressing list.

Hopefully the next year would be better.

Rufus had… fled the picnic as soon as he possibly could.

Work was a great excuse, it really was, and the book store was blessedly quiet and empty and decidedly not pink.

It also wasn't likely to hug him either.

Slowly, as those thoughts didn't curse the island into doing something to him, Rufus relaxed into his usual mindset, going through the online catalogues to see what he should be ordering for arrival next week.

Now and then, he wrestled Dark Nation's toy away from him and then lobbed it down one of the aisles for his dog to chase.

Book Haven is Open.
