There were some days when Shunsui came into his shop and could truly appreciate the brilliance of yet again having something so easy and reliable to fall back on to make him look productive without any extra effort, and those were very good days, that solidified his confidence that this 'vacation' from Soul Society was just the thing.

And then there were days like this, where Shunsui came in, blinked a little, and told himself that he just wasn't going to ask, because if he just ignored it, then everyone was better off in the long run. There was no way there was a solution to this one that would make it any better or cause it to make any more sense. There was no possible way there was any good reason for this, and so Shunsui was not even going to ask, he was just going to breeze right past it to the counter and try to squeeze in a good nap now that the Wednesday thing was over.

Because prominantly displayed at the front of the shop, in all its terrible glory, was an excellent display pyramid....of lettuce.

...and chicken.

And some questions were best left unanswered.

The drummer was still missing his arms, or, if they had been found between last night and tonight, they had promptly gone missing again, but it was okay, the other zombie band members had an idea that just didn't involve duct tape or turning the drummer into a literal headbanger (because, guess what? No one wants to see a drummer go in for a nice smack of the drum and then have his head roll off and across the bar while you were trying to just have a nice cocktail).

They were, it seemed, trying to outfit him with new robotic arms, which was mildly fascinating to watch, but, at the same time, Summer couldn't help being a little doubtful.

"I don't know, guys," she ventured. "This seems like kind of a slippery slope. Robotic zombies? Really? I mean, what's next? Jet packs so you can fly?"

The zombies all looked at each other; Tino looked...well, glared...at Summer.

"What?" she asked. "Don't give me that look. They were going to get the idea eventually, it's just a natural progression. Besides, you know how these things go. They're all over it for a day or two and then by next week, they've completely forgotten."

Tino looked reluctant to let go of his doubt, especially since he didn't exactly relish the idea of admitting that Summer was probably right about that, because then Summer would point out that she was right about most things...

Duke weighed his phone in his hand while waiting for Rey to join him for their morning yoga. Four weeks ago, he'd been sitting here staring at it, waiting for Octavia to reply to his texts. Getting more and more agitated with every minute that passed without an answer.

He was used to it being quiet now. To not getting random photos of the moon or the water or the preserve, little reminders that she was out there thinking about him. His heart had stopped jumping every time his phone went off, wondering if it was her on the other end. He'd stopped expecting to see her when he turned around, giving him that little not-smile and calling him a tripi hef.

He opened up his messaging app, the thread with Octavia. He scrolled up, watching his panic in reverse, pleas for her to be okay turning to happy pictures of goats. To suggestive comments about yoga and check-ins from space, and long, rambling conversations about not much at all. All the way up to the first text she'd ever sent him: a photo of a sad, misshapen hunk of pecan pie.

Because he'd suggested she try one at a fall picnic, the second time they'd hung out.

He tapped on the text box, let his thumb hover over the keyboard, and tried to think of what to tell her. What message he wanted to send into the ether, a month on. But his mind had gone blank, empty as he ever managed to get it when he meditated. He couldn't tell her what he was feeling right now.

That he was okay.

He stood up and took a photo, watched it send. Then he locked the phone, wound up, and threw it into the sea.

And sat back down to wait for Rey again.

After getting roped into some weird team-building kids camp kind of bullshit, Danny was more than happy to be at the station. Even with the snickering morons in the plastic armor.

It had coffee and not a single plastic ball.

"Sonovabitch," he muttered, nearly slipping on a pearl that he must have missed. Because he thought he could escape and he couldn't. He just couldn't.
