In what was sure to be a shocking twist, Topher didn't really feel like doing actual work today. He had a Barry Plodder book to reread, his very last bag of Doritos to eat before he would need to replenish his drawer of inappropriate starches, and... slippers.

Look, Ace had slobbered on his shoes yesterday. And slippers were comfy. Don't you judge.

There was a dance on the island tonight, wasn't there? Something celebrating the moon landing, or some such thing. Really, if you asked Jonothon, an excuse to see old friends... wouldn't go remiss, fine. But getting all dressed up only to go stand in a corner trying not to be seen wasn't exactly his idea of an evening well spent.

It was a dilemma. One that Jonothon was going to mull over while rummaging around for the jam session posters that he'd made months ago and never got around to actually hanging. But then, he figured he already had his mind made up. When the choice essentially boiled down to showing his face in public or being utterly antisocial, it was something of a no-brainer, for Jono.

Besides, he had paperwork to do. Which couldn't possibly wait until later. Truly.

Carl stood at his desk, hand on his hip as frowned down at his pile of Gazettes. The front page consisted of a photo of the building with the new 'Fandom Island Gazette' sign, and an editorial introducing the paper. That had not been his first choice for a full colour splash front page story, but apparently editors weren't as powerful as he'd always believed.

In a sort of personal retaliation, the paper also had few of the stories from his first run added back in, as well as a small tidbit about the Community Center class he'd attended earlier in the week.

As close to Real News as he'd had a chance to get, what with being the only staff.

Scattered between the articles were the few handwavy NPC ads he'd scrounged up and some pictures from around town. In his mind, space filler. Per 'The Purse', as Carl was now calling his backer, it was "Community Interest, Carl. Romance. People will buy more of a product if it's something they care about."

What that meant, Carl had no idea; people didn't buy multiple copies of a paper!

He opened the top issue of the Gazette and ran a critical eye over it. In the middle of a random column, was the worst of the whole thing, though. A brief notice that he hoped like hell no one read:

The Fandom Island Gazette is proud to announce the newest addition to our staff, Aunt Fanny, as our new Advice columnist. Not only a fellow Fandom resident, Aunt Fanny has years of experience and would love to share some of it with you. Please send your letters for Aunt Fanny care of the Gazette Office, 4 Apocalypse Ave.

Carl ran a hand over his face and sighed. He hated answering advice column letters. Maybe he actually could hire someone?

[I am AFK until about 10pm EST, so pings will be slow! OCD coming up!]

Notices had gone out to all and sundry, inviting both those who still lived on the island as well as those who'd moved away to come back for a dance at the Fandom Town community center, in celebration of the 43rd (give or take a day) anniversary of the original moon landing, as well as the wonderful summer they were having.

Once people arrived, they'd find the community center's auditorium decorated according to the theme of the evening. Silver streamers hung all around, and a few papier mache moons had been fixed to the ceiling. The lights were dimmed, and there were flowers – most white, but some of them colored silver – on all the tables, bringing the faint scent of summer with them.

And naturally, there were big tables full of food, like at any large Fandom gathering. There was also a bar, though those underage would have to content themselves with sodas and virgin drinks. Maybe they could get over their sorrow over that on the dance floor, showing off their best Moonwalk.

Everything was ready for the people of Fandom to have a good time.

After a while of pretending to socialize at the dance, April was all too happy to leave, still in her dress, and go to her shift. She'd say it was because the lack of booze was getting to her, but at least a big part of it was that she missed tormenting Tino.

So. At the bar she was, with a sign out front reading:

30% OFF IF YOU'RE VISITING OR SOMETHING

Super straightforward, April. Good work.

"Hang it higher," she instructed Tino from behind the bar. "No, no, lower. And to the left."

The island rumbled not long after the sun went down, shaking the buildings for a moment before going silent. Then, off in the distance, the baby island of Ingvar rumbled in response.

Because something was on its way. Something that was just going to be an annoyance to semi-sentient islands in multiple versions of the universe. And, just in case no one noticed the minor earthquakes, smoke billowed up from Ingvar.

Maybe it was smoke signals to warn people. Or maybe it was just the island version of having a tummy ache. Who knew?

It wasn't good either way.

Signs of a slow night at the Devil's Nest:

* Elaborate construction framework built of saltines and plastic fruit-swords set up at one end of bar

* Random placement of olives with little pig faces drawn on them in Squeezy Cheese on various beams of said framework

* Bo and Tiny at other end of bar taking turns with large rubber band, shooting maraschino cherries, pineapple wedges and marshmallows in the general direction of the olive-pigs

* The brief lull in that frantic activity while Tiny went out to Turtle & Canary to buy some blueberries and licorice bites to complete the original set of birds

* Except for the stupid green boomerang toucan because seriously, who doesn't hate those things?

* Yeah.

[...IDK but now I want to do that.]
