Éponine typically had a book with her when she was working the post office counter, and today wasn't an exception to that rule. For a change of pace, though, she hadn't brought along one of the light, fairly mindless novels she tended to read; she'd picked a book out of one of her growing stacks at random, and it turned out to be a biography of Ada Lovelace. If she was doing the math right (and she couldn't really be sure of that, since she'd hardly been taught much about it beyond what she needed to count money) they were contemporaries -- in fact, Éponine herself had been born just a few months earlier than the woman she was reading about.

It was . . . an unsettling revelation, to say the least. She'd gotten used to the idea of women having more options available to them in this time, but she'd always thought it was beyond the realm of possibility in her own time. She'd always thought she'd learned enough to get by, and further education wouldn't have been terribly practical anyhow. (At least, that was what she managed to convince herself after a while.) It wasn't as if she could have done much with it anyway; what could she have made of herself with it?

As if she didn't have enough reasons to resent her father already.

Safe to say that someone was in a bit of a sullen, slightly angry mood today.

For some reason, the zombie band was trying their hand at Metallica covers today. And as it turned out, it was really pretty difficult for dead guys (and girl) to keep up the tempo that came with 80's metal songs.

For her part, Kitty had already grabbed a bottle of aspirin from her office in case anyone needed it, and was maybe wondering why deafness day couldn't have waited until today.

Once she was sure nothing at the diner had really changed since last time she was here, Bay spent her morning reading a blog about Kansas state politics. Ordinarily that would be about as interesting to her as, say, a blog on three hundred uses for dryer lint, but Daphne kept sending her links to this thing; apparently her new boyfriend wrote it? Daphne was being a little coy about the details, but Jace definitely blogged like a smart person, and the photos Daphne had sent her were cute, so she figured she had no objection.

The blog wasn't totally useless; it was teaching Bay things about her dad's work that she'd never bothered to ask. She kept going back to it every time the diner was between customers.

Sometimes Mary worried about the kinds of trouble Danny was getting into in Las Vegas without her to keep track of him. Today, she was not just worried. She was horrified by the photos that Sam had emailed her of Danny in a bizarre costume. "He's insane! What in the world was he thinking? What was Delinda thinking by letting him do this?" she asked Gunther as she showed him the picture.

You would think that with her summer coming to a close, Emma would be sulking, or nostalgic, or considering dropping out of college so that she could live in a place where her powers were valued and didn't make her a freak.

Not in the slightest.

Emma was, instead, terrorizing the DJ, Tiny, any other staff that were foolish enough to get in her way, and texting the highlights to Pam. Look, a girl had to entertain herself somehow in this small town. And she owed it to Jack and Eric to leave Tiny properly cowed into good behaviour.

The Devil's Nest was open and OCD-free and the devil herself was occasionally taking a spin on hte dance floor.
