The fruit was back again.

After several fruit-free weeks, Victor thought the island might have gotten bored with it. Turned out it was just saving up; today, the workbenches were covered in pomegranates, and gooseberries dropped from the sprinkler system at a slow but steady rate.

Victor put it all into a box and tried to concentrate on his work. It was hard to do that when every so often a pomegranate popped up next to your tools, but he would try.

"How can you be sad about the end of summer when it's 90 degrees outside?" Kenzi demanded.

The mourning cook was not listening to her. At all. In fact, she was trying to put together a brunch spread.

A Very Small Lawn on the Old Side of the Island, Wednesday Morning

"You know, for a guy who's terrified of plastic lawn gnomes, you spend a lot of time hanging around them."

Tiny gave her the big eyes.

Tamsin sighed. "Ugh, I'll take care of it," she said, stepping onto the grass and reaching for the gnome. It was embedded in a flowerpot right across a short wall, so that was great. "You realize that the fact you keep turning up when these things do kind of makes you look suspicious, right?" She yanked it out of the pot and tossed it onto the lawn.

Tiny jumped.

"This is the last time I want to see you near one of these things," she continued, rubbing her hands to get rid of all the excess soil. "Or I'm dragging you in for questioning--"

She brought her foot down on the gnome. It came apart.

"Capiche, big guy?"
