More of those little lock boxes kept turning up in the post office, though to Éponine they were a tiny bit more of a hassle than they had been yesterday -- she'd already had to pry three out of various mailboxes and had gotten a couple of fingers a bit mashed in the process. But the collective $37 she'd gotten out of them still meant another few days' worth of meals, so it all worked out to her benefit anyway.

The newcomers in the strange metal suits, on the other hand, and the vending machines -- she'd seen enough of them around the island by now that erring on the side of deep suspicion seemed like the smart decision. It meant a little longer outside in the cold every time she had to go out on a delivery run, her route adjusted so as to avoid them as much as possible, but if she was lucky that might net her another $50 or so from the boxes. (Yes, those were suspicious too, she'd decided, but useful enough to be worth the risk.)

The floor beneath the Christmas poster in the lobby had collected a sizable fake snowdrift by now. She'd given up on bothering to clean it up.

Admittedly, the first thing Roland thought when he saw the gun vending machines was "ugh, America."

He wasn't proud.

Now that it was obvious that this wasn't, in fact, a second amendment rights thing, but rather something to do with the folks who took over Mooby and managed to make it slightly more sketchy in the process, he felt both better and worse about what was going on in his little adopted town. On the one hand, the federal government of the country he was currently living in wasn't authorizing deadly weapons on sale via automated machine in a town full of teenagers. On the other, some faceless corporate entity that liked to call itself "Handsome Jack" and sounded remarkably slimy and dark on the radio was authorizing deadly weapons on sale via automated machine in a town full of teenagers, and the only thing worse than government bureaucracy run amuck was a faceless corporation run amuck.

Hence the sixties era protest music he'd chosen for today's busking. Though he was steering as clear as he could from the spots around town where the automated purchases of deadly weapons were happening. Just in case.

To Kitty, the worst part of this was knowing that something was about to happen and having to wait. It kind of sucked when you were used to being proactive and you felt stuck instead.

Also, there was the matter of the guns, and some people being far too comfortable with having them. Such as Tino. At least that Kitty could do something about, which is why there was now a sign on the front door of the bar.

VIOLENCE-FREE ZONE
SANCTUARY SPELL IN EFFECT

(I mean, you could try it...
but you'd end up in the lake and it's cold.)

Maybe it'd make someone feel better.

The work in the wooded area was still going strong, much like yesterday, although there were a few minor changes. For one thing, the area that was closed off to all but Hyperion's own was a little bit bigger. For another, there were more armed people patrolling the perimeter. There were also a few of them keeping an eye on the area between the woods and Hyperion's two restaurants (which, by the way, were still in operation – two Mooby burgers for the price of one, just for today!) but they were doing just that, watching. Same as the ones occasionally walking around town. They weren't going to be sternly shooing people away, unlike the ones patrolling the perimeter.

The ones patrolling the perimeter were going to be very stern indeed. Fandom, perhaps it was time to consider not reporting any potential anti-Hyperion actions on the radio anymore.

[ooc: Once again open for interactions with Hyperion workers!]

Mary was hard at work cleaning her guns at the front desk.

Yes, guns. In addition to the one she'd bought at a Las Vegas pawn shop before coming to Fandom, she couldn't resist the novelty of buying a gun from a vending machine. And just for fun, she picked something she would never have found in Las Vegas: a shotgun that took incendiary bullets. She was way too excited over her new "toy," with the added benefit that Gunther took one look at her grinning like a fool over her new shotgun and stayed out of her way.

After two trips -- one back to Kansas City for Toby's wedding weekend, one through a blue wormhole thing -- Bay got to the diner one sister-in-law richer, and $5.13 poorer.

But then she found a lockbox with a little cash stashed among the diner's silverware, so the money thing didn't bother her so much. Not that she was going to go touching big-ass antennas anymore; it seemed like once was enough for the whole process.

She checked her messages to see if she had anything that would fill her in on why town was seeming extra-weird, then scrawled a new sign.

Welcome to Luke's! You're crazy enough to come out today, we'll make whatever you want.

Evan actually kind of felt wrong about coming in to work today, given just how weird things were out there. Opening the bookstore seemed, to him, like a statement that translated to, 'The island is up to weird things and there are sketchy people out there. Buy books!'

Which... made for odd priorities, even for him.

Still, he was in for his shift today, going through new stock and putting it out on the shelves. That he kept looking toward the window to make certain the streets weren't on fire or something probably said volumes about just how into it his head really was, though.

Natalie had picked a fine day to briefly visit Fandom for the first time in –– God, since she'd left at the end of August, right? It had been a while. Enough time that she hadn't thought twice about doing her hair and putting on make-up before she'd left Haiti. It'd save her time, anyway. She was going to be back there already in the afternoon. Work was not something she was running out of, which was a part of why she hadn't made it back until now.

She was still pretty sure that the weird vending machine outside the Perk had to be a fairly new addition. She would've heard about it if it wasn't. She poked at the panel, but had no intention of putting any money in. She didn't need guns, thanks.

Giving the machine and its garish appearance a onceover, she sighed, "Ugh, must be BDE time."
