Kenzi's grasp of Memorial Day was sketchy (at best) but she did put up a sign to acknowledge it.

Rosalind could be found in her shop today, like a good shop owner. (She was not a good shop owner, not really.)

She could also be found nursing a headache that showed no signs of abating and had stuck around all weekend long. Which meant her mood was rather terrible.

Unfortunately, being a functional adult (or at least masquerading as one) meant showing up to work even when she didn't want to.

The shop was open and there was a sign outside that read:

Now hiring! Apply inside!

There was only so much a man could take of acres of farmland and lack of things to do before he bolted. Of course, Jim bolted right back to a smaller place that had almost less to do than Iowa but it was familiar and he felt pretty okay when he was here. It'd be a nice, quick break before he went back and tried to figure out what he was doing with his life.

He was glad to see that nothing had changed in the short time he'd been away (you never knew if that was gonna happen with this place). The Perk looked the same, he recognized some of the people behind the counter and got his order as quickly as he remembered. But that might have been because he flirted a bit. Hey, there weren't very many people to flirt with in Iowa so he had to make sure he was still sharp.

Coffee in hand, Jim flopped down at a table and put his feet up in the chair across from him. This was much better than lying in cornfields and counting the stars. That got old and you tended to lose track after like one million.

Something strange was happening.

After his unexpected landing on this small rock of an island, Hatter had figured that he'd find the Looking Glass and pop over to Alice's home after the small side adventure. Only thing stopping that plan was the fact that he could not find the Looking Glass. It was just gone.

Hatter had waited a night and earlier today, he'd gone out looking again. Still no Looking Glass which left Hatter a bit perplexed and without any real plan as to what to do. This little island, it wasn't terrible, even if it was filled with an all kinds of oysters. The tea left a lot to be desired and it was warmer than he liked but it was quaint. Cute. Adorable, even.

And when Hatter's feet stopped just outside what looked to be a rather fancy restaurant, he couldn't help but peer in the window. It was empty and looked to be dusty and almost sad with disuse. It looked a lot more distinguished than his old tea shop but still, he could almost picture himself inside this place, perched in a comfortable chair while his menu gleamed above his head.

"Hmm." If the Looking Glass was going to go missing in action, perhaps Hatter would just have to entertain himself until he could find a way to Alice or back to Wonderland. "Just needs a bit of a cleaning."

Hatter pushed his hat further onto his head and continued looking inside the windows, imagining all the things he could do to the place behind the window.

Memorial Day.

In honor of that, Mercy was playing a variety of patriotic songs today. Funny how you seemed to find a lot of those in modern country music.

Anyway, be prepared if you came in.

It had been a long time since Ender had come here on his own, but Memorial Day seemed like the perfect time to do so. He'd given Ben a vague explanation about needing to go out and be alone-- and so that was what he was doing.

Here, on this patch of sand, where he'd first built his raft; where he and Karal had shared long conversations in the early morning hours; where he had come when times were rough or times were distant.

It was a perfect place just to sit, in perfect quiet, thinking about Bonzo, the many IF pilots who had given their lives in the last Formic War, the millions of Formic drones who had died, the Formic Queens who had perished in one large swoop by his unthinking order. He curled his legs up further beneath him and watched the sun set - forcing his mind to stay on topic, never drifting, until the grief lit up bright in his heart.
